Nestled on the corner of a serene block in West Village, 704 Seyburn is yet another great example of Shingle Style in Detroit. It was built around 1900. I have been an admirer of this great home for years. #Detroit #Eastside #WestVillageDetroit #ShingleStyle #VictorianArchitecture #CottageStyle #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at West Village) https://www.instagram.com/p/COp85CXD7LG/?igshid=w1hbi5hgmr9c

In 1889, Frank Lloyd Wright, then a 22-year-old draftsman, secured a $5,000 loan from his boss, the great Louis Sullivan, to build a home for himself and new wife, Catherine Tobin. The loan was to be repaid via deductions from Wright's pay. The location of the home, Oak Park, at the time, was a sleepy village that served as a retreat from the bustling city of Chicago. It was originally settled by familes relocating from the East in the 1830s. In the latter decades of the 19th century, elaborate homes typifying of the era were constructed. Wright's home, built in the shingle style, was a departure from everything else around. The shingle style was the preferred choice of many wealthy East Coast families building summer residences in places like Newport, Rhode Island. Some of the notable architects that worked in the style are McKim, Mead & White, Wilson Eyre, Jr., Bruce Price, H. H. Richardson and Wright's previous employer, Joseph Lyman Silsbee. In 1895, with his immediate family expanded, Wright made several changes to his modest home, including the conversion of the original kitchen into a new, enlarged dining room, seperate bedrooms for his children in what was his former studio, conversion of the upstairs nursery into a dayroom for Catherine and the addition of a new kitchen and awe-inspiring, barrel-vaulted children's playroom above it. In 1898, in an attempt to maintain a more balanced professional and personal life, Wright decided to build a new studio that was adjacent to his home, facing Chicago Avenue and connected by a passageway. The Home & Studio is where Frank Lloyd Wright's ideals of what American architecture should be took shape. #Chicagoland #OakParkIl #ShingleStyle #VictorianArchitecture #ChiArchitecture #Chitecture #FrankLloydWright #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #VisitOakPark #EnjoyIllinois #ThisPlaceMatters #NationalHistoricLandmark #WrightSites (at Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CP9pZcODMPY/?utm_medium=tumblr
Michigan's preeminent example of Shingle Style architecture, the home of industrialist and avid art collector, Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919), located at 71 East Ferry Avenue, was designed by renowned Philadelphia architect, Wilson Eyre, Jr. Freer, along with his eventual neighbor, Frank J. Hecker, were partners in the railroad car business. In 1904, Freer acquired the Peacock Room, a beautiful Anglo-Japanese dining room, originally located inside the townhouse of English shipowner, Frederick Richards Leyland, at 49 Princes Gate in London, from Leyland's widow. The Peacock Room was designed by British architect, Thomas Jeckyll, and American painter, James McNeill Whistler. It was reinstalled in a room within the carriage house. Freer bequeathed the Peacock Room as well as his prized art collection to the United States Government, with special instructions provisions. This collection would become the Smithsonian Institute's Freer Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Since 1923, the Freer residence has been home to the Merrill-Palmer Institute (currently Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute), a non-profit organization that focuses on child and family development. It is owned by Wayne State University. #Detroit #EastFerryAvenueHistoricDistrict #MidtownDetroit #WayneState #ShingleStyle #VictorianArchitecture #CharlesLangFreer #WilsonEyreJr #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Charles Lang Freer House) https://www.instagram.com/p/CM7SWJ4jCgd/?igshid=9e296vekzcud
