“Shining A Light”
My latest YouTube Playlist, ‘This Is Not A Rehearsal’, is a metaphor for Life. Touching on Love, Relationships, Heartbreak, Reconciliation and Hope. My playlist(s), and music itself, with or without lyrics, is a medium of communication, a way to convey a feeling, a mood, an idea, a message. It can be playful, relaxing, entertaining, inspiring, brooding, melancholy or joyous. It can also be revelatory, even serve as stimulus for change, understanding and breakthroughs. If we allow it. If we take a journey, even a mini odyssey of listening to a song. One song, from start to finish.
As filmmakers, artists, musicians and the science and inner workings of our minds and perception can attest to, there is much to be gleaned from a first, second and even third look, or listen. We’ll never know until we go...there.
Often we’ll hear part of a song in a film and want to revisit it in full because it sparked our interest. Or the significance of a song in our memory or experience, or that of another’s, to warrant further listening and exploration. A “reason” to listen, if you will. Whatever the case, it involves taking a step outside of our comfort zone and delving a little deeper.
It’s never easy to leave the comfort of our accustomed way of doing things. It’s always accompanied by an intangible awkwardness, an indescribable uncertainty. But isn’t that the case for everything new in life? A new food, a new film, a new language, a new concept, a new bus route, a new job, a new relationship, a new experience that could open doors and take us somewhere we couldn’t fathom or imagine until we took that first step...and followed through.
Listen, all I’m saying and all I’m doing is further expanding on an aspect of life, all life. I appreciate where we, individually, find ourselves now, and to speak candidly, where we’ve found ourselves for most of our lives. I’m only shining a light on something that is ubiquitous, already a part of our lives. And something that goes beyond and clearly transcends exploring music that I am passionately compiling and sharing with you. If anything, this may help us re-examine our approach to music, and new experiences for that matter, and maybe even tweak it and fine tune it to our benefit. Of course one must account for a matter of taste. Taste. Is it innate, acquired or developed? Or all of the above?
There is no logic, no law, no commandment that forces us to always do things the way we’ve always done them, without room for changing our minds. The mere possibility that this discussion may serve as a simple impetus to open new pathways in our perspectives, is more than enough for me to take the time and make the effort to share my thoughts with you today.
We may be surprised to find ourselves discovering experiences that we have shied away from in the past, or even revisiting something familiar in the future with a new outlook. These occurrences are milestones that contain deeper, philosophical, life-affirming and far reaching wisdom that belie their surface gleam and shine and catchy sparkle.
