Song Review: Margo Price - “Shotgun Willie” (Live, May 1, 2022)
For three minutes on May 1, 2022, Margo Price was “Shotgun Willie.”
Price performed a slinky and sinewy rendition of Willie Nelson’s faux-autobiographical number during the concert in his honor that’ll be released April 28 as One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger.
Singing with conviction, Price is in command, the band doing everything she needs it to do on this third album single that follows Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Whiskey River” and Shinyribs’ “I Gotta Get Drunk.”
“Whoa, all right, Margo,” someone explains when it ends.
Indeed.

Song Review: Nathaniel Rateliff - “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” (Live, May 1, 2022)
Nathaniel Rateliff offered the sincerest form of flattery to Willie Nelson when he imitated the singular songwriter on “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.”
Performed and recorded at the May 1, 2022, all-star hat tip to Nelson and set to appear on One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger (April 28), Rateliff’s nod succeeds despite its lack of innovation. Palpable on tape, Rateliff’s gentle reverence - in ascending guitar notes and quavering vocal delivery - elicits the same from the audience, whose delighted cheers punctuate the sparse arrangement and bring the ambiance of the event home to listeners.
Rateliff’s entry follows previous singles from Ray Wylie Hubbard, Shinyribs and Margo Price from an album that’s building anticipation with each single.

Song Review: Shinyribs - “I Gotta Get Drunk” (Live, May 1, 2022)
The members of Shinyribs might’ve gotten a teensy bit tipsy before performing “I Gotta Get Drunk” at the Next Waltz’s Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger.
Or maybe they were just high on life.
In any event, the Willie Nelson cover is not sloppy - it’s a swampy stomper that follows Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Whiskey River” ahead of April 28 release of One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger, which captures the May 1, 2022, various-artists’ gig in its entirety.
Another fine tip of the red bandana.
