Pirate Fact #12:
When pirates were killed it was tradition to draw a portrait of what the pirate would look like 100 years after he died. There were two rules:
1) Only draw the head
2) Draw the pirate’s favorite possession on his head to look like a hat.
This beautiful drawing shows a late pirate who’s favorite possession was his pirate ship!
Jarl Allard in ship hat by Philip Treacy | L’Uomo Vogue, January 1996
I did an internship this semester at a millinery shop in NYC, and used all the fun techniques I learned to make myself this! Because who doesn’t need a Marie Antoinette-inspired tricorn ship hat (with kraken)?? My favorite feature is the hot fix Swarovski crystal suckers on the tentacles.
Some of the absolutely and utterly delightful images that inspired my hat design. (and someday a dress to match! I wish...)

You-know-what is coming up, and here is a treasure trove of wonderfully inspirational ideas: strange and unusual costumes of the centuries.
honestly I feel like ship hats could be the solution to a lot of problems. Want to wear an elaborate headdress to a music festival? Say no to cultural appropriation, and wear a ship hat. Do the clothing styles in your generic fantasy world look a little too generic? Liven things up with ship hats! Bring back ship hats 2k15.
