The overcrowding of the lower deck is shown here very clearly. Space is restricted by the fact that certain areas cannot be used- that below the hatchways and above the manger, around the ladderways and masts, and that allotted to the cabins and the wardroom. The petty Officers have wider berths at the sides of the ship. In the wardroom, cabin space is severely restricted by the need to allow the tiller to swing from side to side. Permanent cabins are fitted against the transom, with four of lighter constructions foreward.
