Ship's bell from HMS Erebus, 1845

The bronze bell was found on the upper deck of HMS Erebus by the anchor windlass at the bow. The bell has several ropes and two markings on its surface: the date “1845” and a large arrow called a broad arrow. For two years, conservators worked on the bell to preserve it. The already significantly advanced effects of corrosion, due to the bell being submerged in salt water, would have continued to progress if corrosion products had not been removed. To preserve the distinctive details that can be seen on the corroded surface, such as the date and the broad arrow, it has not been removed in its entirety. As an effect of the rust, the clapper detached, condemning the bell to eternal silence.

New York Class Battleships: Bells

On USS Texas's bell it has the year 1913 while USS New York's has 1914, even though both were commissioned in 1914. Texas was originally set to be completed and commissioned in 1913, but her construction was delayed and she was commissioned in March 1914.

Note: USS New York (ARC-2) transferred her bell to USS New York (BB-34) in 1914.

Note: the big chip in Texas's bell. According to the staff, the chip happened while she was a museum ship in the 1950's or 1960's. Apparently, a visitor struck the bell on the outside, where the bell is not meant to be struck, with a hammer.

“The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.” (Vincent van Gogh)  It wasn’t an art museum:)  But I spent another enjoyable evening “lost in a museum.”  I explored “Ambrose,” at the South Street Seaport Museum.  Actually, this ship stayed close to shore when she was in use.  Built in 1907, “Ambrose” was a lightship: a “floating lighthouse” to safely guide ships from the Atlantic Ocean into lower New York Bay.  (Photo taken on June 19, 2018)

By the way, you never ring an out-of-service ship's bell, this brings bad luck and possibly calls the spirit of the ship, which then sets off as a spirit ship in search of a new crew.

Ship's bell and compass from the Pangani, before 1913

This bell comes from the wreck of the Flying P ship Pangani (1902). It sank in January 1913 on its way from Antwerp to Chile after a collision with the French steamer Phryné north of Cape La Hague in the English Channel. Only four of the crew survived. The wreck itself was found in 2007 and could be identified by the bell and compass lying beside it.
