A fine photo taken on board the merchantman S/S ELSE BASSE of Copenhagen. She is at anchor at Ivittuut on Greenland for a cargo of cryolyte The ship’s dog has been tird to the railing. Next to the dog lies a few of the beams used to cover the cargo hold. Abt. 1950.
The 2nd photo shows us the crew having a wee break.

“ Hatch is based on the ship’s dog, who was found outside the carpenter’s cabin when the Mary Rose was uncovered.
Hatch would have served as rat catcher on the Mary Rose, though he may have also been an unofficial mascot.”
