Shore leave for a couple of lads of the Royal Danish Navy some times in the 50ies. The location is the infamous "Nyhavn" in the port of Copenhagen... outside the bar Hongkong. This place was -if possible avoided by the police and MPs (my dad was a MP).

A photo from 1928, taken by Anders B Wilse and hand colorized by Frank Hellsten. Traditional cod fishing in Lofoten. The boats are called "åttring"with 4 or 5 sets of oars... and as one can perhaps see, they represent a direct and continous boat building tradition from the pre-viking age.

Poplar Docks: a waggon is being tipped over to pour the coal inside a chute... propably the coal was in the process of being loaded on a ship for export. No info abt. the year.

The Thames tug "Java" passing the Battersea Power Station... very classical and pleasing for the eye. She was scrapped in 1965

Fine photo of a Danish build brig under Norwegian flag, colored by Frank Hellsten.

Found the following info supplied by Frank Hellsten: Norwegian customs officer ready to board the brig Fanø on August 1904. The photographer was Anders B Wilse, and makes part of of the collection of The Maritime Museum of Norway. We have informs, that the ship was built on the island of Fanø by Søren Abrahamsen, sold to a Norwegianin 1896. In 1906 sha eas damaged in a storm on the North Sea, towed to Tyne... and eventually condemned.

moody old photo from a chilly day in the port of Frederikshavn. One can see an icecovered quay and a steam powered tug is making it's way, running. Taken in the winter of 1940 by Herluf W Jensen.

The busy inner port of Copenhagen in the late 20s / early 30s. The name of the location is Kvæsthusbroen" meaning the quay of the "injury-house" it being an old and apropriate name for a hospital getting it's supply of patients from the Navy and (I imagine) merchant Navy.

Bird's perspective of the Canada Dock 1966. It's on River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool... situated in the northern dock system in Kirkdale.

The Copenhagen Free harbour in the 30s. In 1929 General Motors decided to build an assembling factory in Copenhagen. GM car parts were sent here and assembled.

Inner port of Copenhagen 1940s; boxes of herrings are loaded for sale. The herring catch was the origininal reason for founding the city abt 850 years ago. Copenhagen started as a fishing village.
