Why Y’all Should Consider Shipping Shiroan (Shiro x Coran) ((aka the Voltron Rarepair))
Basically I’m stuck in rarepair hell and I wanna be NOT stuck in rarepair hell.
This ship is pretty much a slow burn one, but let me break this down for you.
Shiro and Coran have a lot in common. And I do mean a lot. There’s more than you’d think there is for this ship.
Firstly, neither of these characters can be skewed to be underage. “But Coran was in a cyrotube for 10,000 years and--” He wasn’t technically alive, so he’s still whatever age he was when he entered the thing. As for Shiro... Well, he’s very obviously Not A Child. I like to headcanon Shiro between 30-35, and Coran at 32-39.
Second, both of these characters have suffered trauma.
Shiro’s is obvious: He suffered as a Galran prisoner and their Champion, and has to carry the weight of all the deaths he’s caused as a result of that. He gets flashbacks and sufferes from PTSD and possibly depression, and he could suffer from other mental illnesses on top of that. He also suffers from dissociation, something that is common for anxiety and depression when it is trauma-based (it’s your brain not allowing you to process information post-trauma because it doesn’t think you can handle it. According to my irl friend who suffers from dissociaton @forteandbass, a nap does wonders to make it go away).
For Coran’s trauma, you have to think about it for a bit. I don’t know about you, but if I were a ruler and I was going to put my daughter in a cyropod from which I might not return to to let her out and knew she’d be let out eventually, I’d put someone I trust with her so that she would have a loyal and incredibly smart individual to aid her. Coran is older than Allura, and to gain that level of trust he would probably have to be one of King Alfor’s confidents. Now, Coran might not be the best at coming up with plans; he is, however, very good at noticing other’s emotions. I’d like to think that Coran is a doctor; we never see Allura messing with the cyropods. Because he’s a doctor, he was also probably a field medic. Which means he’s seen a lot of shit. Wounds, deaths, people he could have saved with more time but couldn’t, people he wasn’t allowed to save; He’s more than likely been through the ringer. Now, I have no doubt that King Alfor groomed Coran so that the man could take care of the castle and everything else while Allura took care of the royalty things; however, this does not negate the fact that Coran most likely suffers from his own sort of PTSD. We don’t see enough of him on-screen to determine if he has any other mental illnesses (as far as I know, I won’t pretend to know all the mental illnesses), but I wouldn’t be surprised if he also suffered from depression and dissociation.
Third, their personalities really mesh well with each other. Shiro is kind, calm, and just a bit controlling; Coran is kind, hyper, and not super controlling. Shiro sees people suffering and isn’t quite sure what to do because he can’t even fix himself, but Coran will see someone suffering and go help as best he can without sugarcoating it. If they teamed up, they’d be the best comforting duo ever, and they’d get a lot more done.
There are more reasons, but it’s midnight and I have a midterm at 8:30am tomorrow. Goodnight, y’all!!!
