Q. Tell us how you came to choreograph for k-pop.
S: When we were backdancers for BoA, SM Entertainment’s Japanese branch proposed that we give lessons to this group called EXO in Korea. Was it a year before their debut? Another big reason we were called to Korea was because a choreographer there knew about our work. So we sent them a dance video from Japan, then traveled over to give them dance lessons and choreography. We started with a week of rhythm training. That’s how our first k-pop choreographing experience was with EXO.
Q. EXO had many teasers pre-debut. Did you work on them too?
O: Some on Kai’s performance with the jacket.
Q. What are your impressions of the EXO members?
S: They’re really respectful. And polite. Korean artists in general practice extremely hard. And they seem to like each others’ company. It’s gladdening to see them express enjoyment with their whole being.
N: And they’re stoic, seriously.
O: And pure.
K: At mealtime, D.O. brings us forks (laughs).
S: His consideration is no joke! (laughs)
K: When it’s time to eat, it’ll be D.O. giving out forks (laughs).
S: It’s not like we’re on an exchange program, but when the four of us are standing together, he’ll slide over and sit by us. And then we’ll eat together.
O: It was cute~.
S: It’s cute~. So we’ll have fun and laugh together. D.O. is the type of person who you can get close to without having to talk much.
K: The EXO members are all sociable, but D.O. was in particular.
N: He stuck to us like air (laughs).
S: And... ah, in Chanyeol’s case, I thought “he’s seriously huge” (laughs). He’d sprawl out on the floor as soon as it hit break time and the amount of space he took up was amazing (laughs).
N: He’s a simple guy.
O: And you can tell right at first glance that Kai is good at dancing.
K: Anyone can tell that he’s good. He absorbs choreography quickly too.
O: He always goes beyond our expectations, learning the choreography+alpha.
S: He totally knows how he wants to be perceived.
Q. You were also in charge of the recently released LOTTO. Were there any episodes concerning it?
S: We couldn’t be there personally to choreograph them this time. So we sent a detailed video to teach the Korean choreography team. Because we didn’t know that only eight of them would be dancing (member Kai was sitting out of song promotions due to a concert injury), the formation was readjusted in Korea. Although it’s a real pity that Kai couldn’t participate, we were glad to see the other members do well and give a great show.
