Kunzite really, really doesn’t want to do that. Maybe it’s selfish, but he doesn’t want Zoisite to think of him as weak. He knows that there’s no way he could still see him as the powerful, brave leader that he once was now, not after everything he’s done, but ... if he opens up to him here, he knows he’ll shatter any remaining admiration Zoisite has for him.

Kunzite has never thought of himself as great, but he’s always known that Zoisite has. He doesn’t know what he’d do without that.

“I believe it would be best not to.”

His words come out quietly and uncharacteristically hesitantly. He doesn’t know if he’s making the right choice.

‘Annoyed’ would be putting what Kunzite felt mildly. Why did Jadeite never listen to him? There really was no point in being the leader if his orders weren’t respected.

“Jadeite, if I tell you that I don’t need help, that means I don’t need help. You are wasting your time.”

Part of him understands what Jadeite is doing. Part of him knows that he can’t keep pushing the others away and insisting on taking the burden alone. However, he will not acknowledge that part of himself. Involving the others in his business is how this mess started. It’s best not to repeat that.

Honestly, Kunzite did not feel ‘okay’. He felt as if the air had been stolen from his lungs, and no matter what he did he could not take it back. He felt as if he was existing on a completely different plane to the rest of the world, floating just above them. He felt as if he had been attacked, but there was no one to fight back against.

There was no point in telling Nephrite this, however. It would simply be worrying him over nothing.

Kunzite had been trying not to pay much attention to the movie, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it later— he couldn’t help but find that thought funny, that Kunzite, the great warrior, leader of the Shitennou, was terrified of simple moving pictures. It wasn’t funny though, his paranoia was becoming increasingly troublesome and he knew that if it wasn’t for Apollo laying beside him he wouldn’t be able to stay in the room.

“I suppose they would be more intelligent if they knew they were in a horror movie.”

When he speaks he doesn’t show a hint of anxiety, his tone light and a small smile on his face.

“Although ... I would say that you would likely perform better in a situation like that.”

He glances up from the book he had been reading ( honestly, it isn’t very well-written, and by now he is only reading it to see how much worse it can get ) and gazed up at the younger Shitennou.

“You want to braid my hair?”

Of course, Kunzite isn’t an idiot. He knows that his hair is quite beautiful. He just hadn’t expected someone to outright ask him that— especially not Zoisite.

        her cheer does not seem to dim, though it mutes subtly. fingers clasp one another as weight shifts, rocking from heel to toe tip. until now, any voices of DOUBT in regards to her gift had been silenced. but suddenly, hotaru finds herself a little uneasy. it was a rather silly present, honestly. she cannot imagine zoisite would find much use for it.

          ❛ ah, well - i couldn’t decide what to do for your birthday at first. i’d heard from mamo-chan that you liked chess. it wasn’t until i looked at the chess pieces that i had an idea, so, ❜ stray strands of ebony are tucked neatly behind the curve of her ear. ❛ i carved four knights out of wood, and painted each of them. they’re supposed to look like they’re each wearing your earth general uniforms - with the correct colours and everything ! but they aren’t much bigger than a normal chess piece, so, it might not be easy to tell ... ❜

          if hotaru was a touch more cynical, perhaps she might have LAUGHED at the statement. their current predicament was certainly more than a ‘bit of a dilemma’. a slim finger rises to her lips - whether to silence him or herself she’s unsure - as the soft padding of footsteps pass by their hiding place. head tilts, curtain of ebony parting to reveal the curve of her ear as she listens intently.

          step. step. step. step.

          ‘ one ’. she mouths, holding the single digit forward to emphasize her point. ‘ security guard. ’

         she cannot BELIEVE that she allowed the blond to convince her of this poorly planned scheme. the night is still young, she cannot imagine they’ll remain undetected til’ sunrise if they attempt to make idle conversation. an inaudible sigh leaves her frame small, back pressed flush to a wall as she fixes jadeite with a pout, brow dipping in the beginnings of a glare. he appears to be looking in her direction, yet in this absolute darkness, she cannot be certain.

         ‘ my mamas and papa are going to be suspicious when i don’t come home tonight. you better hope they don’t find out about this. i won’t be able to save you. ’ hands move in a flurry as she signs the message to the young general, hoping he can see enough to understand her.

         this is the LAST time she trusts him to plan an evening for the two of them.
