Kunzite really, really doesn’t want to do that. Maybe it’s selfish, but he doesn’t want Zoisite to think of him as weak. He knows that there’s no way he could still see him as the powerful, brave leader that he once was now, not after everything he’s done, but ... if he opens up to him here, he knows he’ll shatter any remaining admiration Zoisite has for him.

Kunzite has never thought of himself as great, but he’s always known that Zoisite has. He doesn’t know what he’d do without that.

“I believe it would be best not to.”

His words come out quietly and uncharacteristically hesitantly. He doesn’t know if he’s making the right choice.

Kunzite had been trying not to pay much attention to the movie, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it later— he couldn’t help but find that thought funny, that Kunzite, the great warrior, leader of the Shitennou, was terrified of simple moving pictures. It wasn’t funny though, his paranoia was becoming increasingly troublesome and he knew that if it wasn’t for Apollo laying beside him he wouldn’t be able to stay in the room.

“I suppose they would be more intelligent if they knew they were in a horror movie.”

When he speaks he doesn’t show a hint of anxiety, his tone light and a small smile on his face.

“Although ... I would say that you would likely perform better in a situation like that.”

“Hm?”

He glances up from the book he had been reading ( honestly, it isn’t very well-written, and by now he is only reading it to see how much worse it can get ) and gazed up at the younger Shitennou.

“You want to braid my hair?”

Of course, Kunzite isn’t an idiot. He knows that his hair is quite beautiful. He just hadn’t expected someone to outright ask him that— especially not Zoisite.

In theory, he knows that he should be resting. He knows that if any of the others were in his position, he would order them not to put too much pressure on themselves, and to allow their injuries to heal. However...

Oh, why did this have to be coming from Zoisite? Had it been Jadeite, or maybe even Nephrite, he could have at least tried to lie his way out of the situation or, if push came to shove, snapped and make them want to leave him alone.

However... lying to Zoisite always made him feel guilty, and he didn’t know what he’d do if he ever lashed out at him.

Which left him in a troubling position. What on Earth could he say? If he couldn’t lie, and couldn’t lash out... the truth? No, that would never work.

❝ I’m sorry, Zoisite. ❞

In the end, that’s all he can get out, not even trying to make eye contact with the younger man.

He looks over at the roses, confused for only a moment before his mind manages to put the pieces together. He places a mark into the book he had previously been reading and sets it aside, giving Zoisite and the flowers his full attention.

Despite his best efforts, it’s no secret that he hasn’t been doing so great recently. On top of the struggles of modern life, and dealing with the after-effects of the Dark Kingdom, he’s been finding himself missing the Golden Kingdom more and more.

And, one aspect of the Golden Kingdom that he recently mentioned to Zoisite, the rose gardens.

Oh.

That... made sense. Complete sense. Damn, damn, when was Nephrite getting back? Kunzite knew that he wasn’t equipped to deal with this kind of conversation.

But... well, who knew how long it would take Nephrite to get home. And even if he did arrive soon, it would probably take Zoisite a while to feel able to open up to him. There was no real harm in letting Zoisite keep his feelings to himself for a while longer, but something about the thought of him suffering alone made Kunzite feel uncomfortable.

With a small sigh, he shifted closer to the smaller Shitennou, hesitantly wrapping an arm around him.

He knows that there’s nothing that he can say to make Zoisite miss his family any less.
