A circle in a square. A circle in a square is what has been on Nico’s left wrist all his life. The legends say it’s significant to how you’ll meet your soulmate. What bullshit. Not everyone can have a soulmate.

Nico never dared to even HOPE he’d find his “soulmate”. Not after the first time.

It was bad. Let’s just say it ended in enormous amounts of both physical and emotional pain.

“But the past is the past, so just forget about it and move on” was his mantra. And so he did.

He was taking his normal route home through the city, rushing down West 50th Street,  keeping his head down in the cool autumn air, being careful to not make eye contact.

Suddenly, he hit a warm body, and then the icy sidewalk. He looked up and was met with the most beautiful blue eyes he’d ever seen.

“Oh my gods, I’m so sorry, are you ok?!?” The man said. “Um. Uh… Yeah. I’m good.” Nico muttered. He snuck another look.

The man had shaggy blond hair, almost like a surfer, and very nice lips. It really wasn’t fair.

Nico grabbed the man’s outstretched hand and stood up. “By the way, my name is Will.”

“Will.” Nico said slowly, trying it out. “That’s a very nice name. I’m Nico.”

“Nico. I like it.” Will said. Nico’s heart jumped, and he pushed the feeling away. He couldn’t develop a crush, that’s the last thing he needed, especially after last time…..

Nico swayed on his feet, causing Will to steady him. “Sorry, but you do NOT seem ok.” Will said, “We should go somewhere where you can sit down. There’s a McDonald’s down the street, we could go get coffee?” Nico mumbled his agreement, and they started off down the street.

Once they got there, Will pulled a flashlight out of his pocket, and started checking Nico for a concussion. (“Shhhh. I’m a doctor.”)

So they got their coffee, and started talking, and Nico couldn’t stuff his feelings down forever. By the time they left, he couldn’t deny that he had an all-out crush.

Before they parted ways that night, they traded numbers.

After texting for a couple days, Will finally asked him out on a date.

And that led to more dates, and then a couple more, and well, I think you can figure out the rest.

Nico never really did end up believing in that “soulmate” crap until many, many years later, when he finally realized they met in front of the Circle in the Square Theater.
