There’s some places that just hold a special place in your heart and while all we’ve visited so far has left a lasting impression, Bali captured our soul.
Shivakali invited us to join them for their yoga retreat that was dedicated to tradition, healing, and tantra. We gladly accepted and after some chaotic travel we arrived to peaceful paradise. Our days were spent in the jungle of Balian (away from Ubud) filled with yoga, meditation, ayurveda, wellness, philosophy, inquiry, connection, and countless blessings.
While most of our time was spent on the lovely property that is Shankari Villa - we made time to go out and explore the nearby village, sacred river, and secret beach. Bright eyes and smiles were exchanged in passing with the locals. We quickly leaned into the laid back Balinese lifestyle.
One of my personal favourite days of the retreat was when we all got dressed up in traditional garb and ventured out to the Indian Ocean to offer respects and receive blessings at the water temple. Pura Rambut Siwi is not the typical temple that most people are referred to rather this one is secluded and right on the black sand beach. The architecture with the infamous Indonesian sunset as a backdrop is something remarkably special.
Scooting around is a must. Especially along the road where the rice paddies are. We pulled over to walk through and admire the intricate maze of landscaping. We had quite the lunch with a view to say the least.
After the retreat a handful of us stayed behind to enjoy more of that Indo life. We left Balian and stayed in Ubud - a bit touristy yet lots to enjoy. We also spent time in Caangu which is heavily ex-pat populated with Venice Beach like vibe.

On our last day we booked a sunrise trek up Mount Batur. The itinerary was gnarly having us wake up for a pick up of 2:30am to be shuttled over to the starting point. Our guide lead us through the darkness of the early morning up the side of the volcano and around the entire crater (about 4 hours long in total) until we reached the tip top of 1717 meters above sea level for a reward to witness the magnificent rising sun. After literally monkeying around we began our descent down the volcano.
A post trek coffee was well in order. Thankfully we stopped into a bean plantation for a tasting. There after headed back to pack up and check out. So long to Ubud to Seminyak to spend the rest of the delay relaxing at Potato Head. The weather was perfect as the sun eventually set and we realized this would be the last until we return. With this we enjoyed our final supper at Kaum.
A sincere terima kasi (thank you) to Bali for opening us up in new ways that has truly transformed us in the most positive of expressions. Looking to get back to you very soon. Until then, be well, grow strong, and stay beautiful!
