The picture reminds me of Shiva and Parvati, one of the primordial Gods and Goddess of Hindu mythology. Their union is seen symbolically through 'Shivalinga'- a sacred model of their being. The shivalinga is a merge of yoni- the womb and linga- the phallus and together they symbolize the merging of microcosmos and macrocosmos,the divine eternal process of creation and regeneration, and the union of the feminine and the masculine that recreates all of existence.

The metaphorical creative principle also finds its equivalence in this picture. The union cannot be reduced to sexuality, the profane passion to which we readily interpret. The union is explosive but measured both seem to bleed on to each other. Hannibal tells Will, how love can make us aware of the other but this is not simply two of them being aware of the other. It is pure understanding, it's pure empathy, which is insanely absent in our lives; Perhaps for a reason.
