Rant about magic in fantasy:
In most pieces of media and literature I’ve read I’ve noticed a common theme.
There’s typically 5 main types of magic. Light magic, White magic, grey magic, Black magic, and Dark magic. The closer to grey magic you are usually the more versatile the types of magic you can do but the closer to Light or Dark magic you are the more powerful you are.
A common misconception I see is that Black magic and Dark magic are the same and both are evil. Black magic doesn’t mean evil. Black magic is the use of morally evil or ambiguous magic to do good. Dark magic is the use of evil or ambiguous to kill, do harm or commit evil acts. Hence the confusion between the two types. Spells involving protection and identification through Blood magic or Speak with Dead or Revivify from D&D would be Black Magic. A Horocrux or Animate Dead (also from D&D) would be Dark magic. An outlier to this would be Hexes which are Black magic and do have the ability to injure but very rarely seriously injure or kill.
Grey magic is magic that is neither positive or negative in any way. It cannot harm but it cannot help either. This would be Illusions, Transfiguration, Conjuration and Enchantment.
Light magic and White magic are very similar. A Light mage would be more powerful that a White mage but possesses less versatility. A great example of this is actually Harry Potter. He is a Light Mage and possesses vast amounts of power but only competently uses certain types of spells and he excels in defense against the dark arts which is a class based of the protection of yourself and others. White Mages excel at healing magic, and herbology. Both excel at Abjuration but as stated previously, the Light mage would be more powerful.
There are some outliers to this model. All types of magic can excel at Evocation and Destruction Magic’s. However Divination is impossible to classify. It appears anywhere and is typically gifted to a person through genetics or a higher power.

These are just observations of a common theme in fantasy as well as my own personal interpretation of magic. This is not an analysis on Wicca. I am not one. My Wiccan friends have very clearly told me this it *not* how magic works.
