Assignment 4: Portraiture, Self-Portraiture, and Depth of Field
As sociologists and psychologists will confirm, people are not simply what they are but rather are engaged in a continuing process of creating and projecting themselves. Language, gestures, clothing, and the like are the usual means by which people announce their social aspirations, express their fantasies, and mark out the boundaries of their identities. Such ideal projections seldom appear completely natural and do not always fit harmoniously into the external reality. Cracks, incongruities, and contradictions with the environment can be expected; the element of fiction is usually unmistakable. The camera is very sensitive to this phenomenon, but not every camera operator knows it.
