Tutorial Review: “How to shoot a film ALONE!” By “alone” Darious Britt (@d4darious) is referring to the crew—one person handling script, location scouting, lighting, direction, sound, and editing. His main tip is “keep it simple.” This means a short movie with a cast of just two or three, set in only a couple of locations, and without car chases or other big actions. But this tutorial isn’t just about one key idea. In 19 entertaining minutes Darious gets deep into the weeds. He covers such tasks as storyboarding, camera angles, close-ups, focus, framing, dialogue, wild sound, and dubbing. Darious illustrates what he’s talking about by including his own well-made short movies, and this adds authenticity to the presentation. Although the filmmaker uses a Canon 60D, just about all his suggestions will work with smartphones. And for those of us who love our phones, he includes a nifty way of using a mobile to record dialogue.
