#shortPUT : Talking Nigeria but that's the case with most African countries. How many have veterinary medical centers at their local government levels? Non! All we have is a ramshackle veterinary hospital at an eyebrow location with no modern equipment to show for it. How do such countries ensure surveillance in epidemiological value of known animal diseases talk not of new and emerging animal diseases brought about the ever worsening Climate Change. To add salt to injury, Nigerian health authority which has for years unable to stampout Poliomyelitis and even Lassa Fever now glow in the empty glory of a World Health Organization, WHO's resident officer in Nigeria called "Nigeria best attempt in standing up to the challenge of coronaVIRUS" just because we are able to "arrest" a patient who beat our airport security check at Lagos to be found later in Ogun state. What a shame. Empty glorification wont lead us anywhere when it comes to these new and emerging, very cunningly evasive animal diseases crossing over to man not at the airports but sincerely yours at the border of man-animal relationship as foods or domestic pets! What the Chinese missed and which we must all improve upon is to increase our animal health surveillance and animal sourced food hygiene by improving our veterinary services especially at the rural areas where human/animal relationship are still at the prehistoric age! Also, the animals with domestic values must not be kept with freedom to employ or not employ a veterinary doctor to the animals' care. Many dog owners today handle injections by themselves including restricted drugs like vaccines and immunoglobulins. This writer participated in a WHO survey which tried to know the extent of Veterinary Doctors involvement in the illicit use of free Polio-Vaccine as growth prompter in sheep and goat! That's the extent of the damage in our preparedness at curbing animal diseases in man. The fact of the survey was that Human Health officers who ration the free polio vaccine find other ways of making money from it and they sold it out to quacks who parade villages and hamlets as veterinary...
