Death of One
As he sat in is living room eating his salty as hell Top Ramen noodles, Rodney couldn’t help but be distracted by the lingering smell of smoke. With a slow crawl it began exactly 2.3 miles away in an apartment complex he knew all to well. He used to date a girl that lived there a few months ago but had not been back to see her for quite some time. She wasn’t exactly happy with him at the moment so It’s not like he had the option. Rodney had no objection to women hating his guts, regardless of how unhealthy people thought it was. All it meant to him was closure rather than uncertainty. He could always count on the women of his past to never want to associate with him. This also meant drama between current and past girlfriends was a non existent problem. Now don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t mean Rodney enjoyed being disliked by women. He just merely found it convenient on specific occasions. His last endeavor left his girl devastated, and it was not something he was proud of.
He stood on the side walk and closed his eyes. The smell of smoke casted a trail in his mind up the street and around the corner. He began walking in the direction the smell lead him, and for the fun of it continued to close his eyes along the way. He had always taken great pride in his ability to maneuver throughout the city of London without his sight. It was a huge part of his training back in the airforce, and he was at the top of his class in navigating with the senses. His ability to visualize the world around him was unparalleled by any of his colleagues and had served him well in the past. As he followed his nose, the trail brightened in his mind and the origination of the odor became clear. He approached the front of his old girlfriends apartment and sighed in disbelief as flames vomited from her bedroom window. Luckily the fire department had already arrived at the scene and men were tackling the flames from both in and outside the building.
As the firefighters finally won their battle, the people slowly returned to their respective apartments in the building. Rodney casually followed the crowd into the building and took the elevator to his ex girlfriends floor. As the doors opened, he saw the shroud of her door blasted with charcoal and surrounded by both police and caution tape. He approached the door and was met by 2 policemen that shooed him away from the door.
“You cant be here, this is a restricted area,” one of them said. He was a taller guy, with a face as dark as the burned down door. Large in both stature and frame, he was quite fit with large muscles struggling to be controlled by his uniform. He would be intimidating to most, however at 6’6 nearly 230 pounds Rodney wasn’t a small guy either. He saw this man as nearly an obstacle to an objective, and would be treated that way.
“I understand sir, but i believe a few personal belongings of mine may have been left at this place and I would like to take an inventory on their status.” Cops seemed to respond to complicated roger this, roger that talk, and Rodney always used it to his advantage.
“I don’t care if your grandmother’s wedding ring was in that apartment, your not getting any closer,” The other cop responded. He was a much smaller man, more chubby in stature compared to his partner. This was the type of man that really irritated Rodney. The kind that resembles a small aggressive dog that just wont shut up.
“No worries, I can always come back. No need to be a dick, officer. I was just coming to see if i could get some of my stuff,” Rodney replied. As he swallowed his pride and reluctantly spit the words, he could feel his fingertips digging into the skin of his palms out of frustration. His mindset instantly changed however when he peered over the police’s heads and into the front door of the apartment. As he looked closer, he realized that the entire apartment had been burned to a crisp, and that nothing of his would have survived that inferno. More worryingly was the group of investigators that seemed to be crowded around a specific object in the middle of the apartment. He did not recognize the tall narrow object until one of the men around it backed away into the other room. His knees fell weak as he peered into the eyes of Casey’s charbroiled body. Her arms were tied up to the center beam that ran across the ceiling of her apartment, rendering her immobile when the flames must have erupted. Parts of her legs were missing as the majority of her flesh had been burned away from the fire. All that was left was her bright green eyes, which were stuck looking towards her right. “I don’t even want to know what happened, and I’m never coming back here. who would do this to her?” Rodney exclaimed as he made his way toward the elevator and closed the doors. As he slowly moved down to the first floor and out of the building, all he could think about was the look of her eyes. Why did this happen to her? Was I any part of why this happened?
He walked back to his apartment as he rattled his brain for any occurrence that would indirectly drag her into a situation warranting this result. He sat back down and finished his cold noodles in bewilderment. Little did he know that it wasn’t something from his past that killed his ex. It wasn’t a result of a poor decision made at a prior hazardous job that put her life in danger. Instead, it was his heart that put her in danger, or lack there of. The police would find that no struggle was made and the security tapes would reveal that no one else entered or exited her apartment for nearly a week before that fateful day. They would however see film of Casey carrying gallons of gasoline into her apartment the day before the apartment caught fire. She had tied herself onto that ceiling beam and burned herself alive.
