There is a resident at my job who would stop what she’s doing to remember my name every time I passed by. She said I was the only name she’d remember, she’d take pride in getting it right.
One day, I told a coworker about an interaction I had with this woman I thought was cute- she hadn’t seen me in a while and couldn’t get my name. When it finally came to her she said she thought of cuticles, to think of an emery board, my name being Emery, Boom! Got it.
The coworker asks who and for the life of me, her name fell out of my brain. After not being able to recall her name she walks by and I say that’s her, she says my name and the coworker starts laughing saying I just told her about the other day. Then she ends it by laughing saying “He forgot your name!” The resident laughs too and makes a remark about me being too young to forget stuff. I laughed, however, I was not happy that she shared the name slipped my mind. For the very reason that happened.
She stopped trying. Not just with me either. Possibly got offered. Saw her twice today and she didn’t try. She challenged herself to remember a name and she’d get it right in most cases. It was a small victory for her. She said mines was the only one she could remember, not even her friends here sometimes. Now she doesn’t even try with anyone else, giving her one less activity to challenge herself and keep her mind sharp. Sometimes people need to keep their mouth shut and not tell everything. Does more harm than good.
