“It’s the last little stretch,” I keep telling myself, “it’s just one last little stretch”. When is it a good time to retreat? 

I asked my dad’s friend the other day. He’s old, around my dad’s age, and he’s been living in partial seclusion for around a decade now. I used to send him messages sometimes, when I felt lonely. He was one of the few, back in the day, that I knew understood the feeling. “Not yet,” he said. “You gotta wait some more years. Heavens knows I waited. But then it’ll be time. You’ll be a hermit in no time.” He’s a pianist. That’s what he went to school for, Oberlin and then Austria. He had money and talent. Sometimes I remember I have neither. 

I’m so tired! I wake up and I’m tired. I sleep 10 hours and I’m tired. Is the pain real? Does my body really hurt? Sometimes I wonder if I made everything up. I was born in heaven and built my own hell. “The real trap is the mind!” says the little voice in my head. How many voices can there be?
