Charlie Chaplin in the 1918 film "Shoulder Arms".
While escaping from the soldiers, Charlie finds shelter in the bombed shell of a building, where he collapses on a bed. Moments later, the French girl, played by Edna Purviance, returns home to find an American soldier lying on her bed. She sees his bloody hand and starts to wash the blood away. Charlie wakes up to this beautiful sight and pretends to sleep. After a moment of comical play, he wakes up. Since Tramp doesn't speak French, he tries to pretend he's an American soldier. Unfortunately, German soldiers arrive and in a very funny scene where Charlie gains and loses the upper hand, he escapes from the enemy soldiers.
