Seen How Things Are Hard by Elliott Smith from the collection album New Moon
From a Basement on the Hill was released in the UK and Europe on 18 October 2004 (and a day later in the US), almost one year to the day from 34-year-old Elliott Smith's death (he died on 21 October 2003).
Smith had recorded around 50 songs that were in various stages of completion at the time of his death (which was initially considered a suicide, but is now considered undetermined and potentially murder), with 9 considered to be completely finished. Smith's family hired producer Rob Schnapf (who worked on 3 previous Smith albums), along with recording engineer (and former girlfriend) Joanna Bolme to sort through the remaining songs and determine if any of them could be finished, and chose an additional 5 songs that only needed mixing.
From a Basement on the Hill received critical acclaim, while a few complained that it was not the album Smith had intended (Schnapf agreed).
The album was Smith's highest-charting release, peaking at #19 in the US.
