Has House of the Dragon merged Daeron Targaryen and Trystane Truefyre? Because it’s looking that way. Spoilers below.
In the book only when Aemond was dead and Aegon II was presumed dead with no news for a long time did the Caltrops think about crowning Daeron. But they did not go through with it because the Two Betrayers were causing problems and needed to be dealt first. This happened after the First Battle of Tumbleton and Battle above God’s eye. Around the same time, Rhaenyra fled King’s Landing and the power vaccum led to the rise of dubious kings.
In the show however Ormund has already proclaimed Daeron king. Though Aegon II is presumed dead Aemond is very much alive, missing yes but he and his dragon are known to be alive. So Ormund crowning show Daeron is borrowed from Larys’s book plot when he and Perkin of Fleabottom declared Trystane Truefyre a supposed bastard son of Viserys king after Rhaenyra peaced out during the Moon of three Kings. Book Trystane if he really was Viserys’ son, did not have any claim as long as Daeron and other legitimate members of Viserys family were alive. This made him an illegitimate ruler and he was cast down when Aegon II returned to King’s Landing. It looks like what’s happening in hotd because though Show Daeron is legitimate, Aemond is still known to be alive so he cannot really claim the throne making his situation similar to Book Trystane.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they, despite the age difference, also merge book Gaemon Palehair with show Daeron or perhaps he is already merged with Fake Daeron. Thus far there are four factions in hotd, three amongst the greens themselves. Show writers are tripping because a lot of TG infighting divisions don’t exist in the book. It would have been much meatier if the Dance was confined to two main factions.
