Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Countdown: 15 Days to Go!
Less than 15 days to go until the movie premieres, and today I will feature the Salamander, the Sea Serpent, and the Shrake on this blog.
The Salamander has a M.O.M. classification of XXX. The Salamander is similar in form to the non magical lizard of the same name, though very much unique. Salamanders are born from magical fires, taking on the color of the flames surrounding it, whether they are blue or red in color. Its diet consists of flames. Outside of the fire, the Salamander is white, though it cannot survive long without the fire. If fed pepper on a regular basis, the Salamander can survive without the flames for six hours at most. However, the Salamander will die if the fire that created it is extinguished. Its blood is a useful commodity for wizards, as it has curative and restorative properties.
The Salamander was featured in one of Hagrid’s Care of Magical Creatures classes. In addition, there was a rather memorable scene in the books in which Fred and George Weasley decided to find out what would happen if they fed a Filibuster Firework to a Salamander. This experiment resulted in the Salamander whizzing around the Gryffindor common room in a shower of sparks, until the Salamander escaped into the comfort of the fire, hopefully unharmed. Sadly, this scene was not included in the movies. Hopefully the Salamander will appear in the new movies.
The Sea Serpent, class XXX, is a water dwelling snake with head similar to a horse’s head. Its body can span up to one hundred feet long, and often coils up out of the water in a line of humps as it swims. Sea Serpents, despite Muggle stories, are not particularly aggressive, and there are no accounts of the Sea Serpent killing humans. They are seen throughout the waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean seas.
The Sea Serpent is not mentioned in the original books and movies, so hopefully we get to see it in one of the five new movies.
The Shrake is a fish with a M.O.M. classification of XXX. Its body is scattered with spines, which help it evade fishing nets. It is said the Shrake was created in the early 1800′s by wizard sailors in retaliation against Muggle fisherman who had insulted them. Shrakes are found in the Atlantic Ocean, much to the dismay of the Muggle fisherman who find their nets destroyed.
The Shrake is not featured in the books or in the movies. Despite that, I don’t particularly care if the Shrake is in the new movies. It doesn’t seem to be a particularly interesting magical beast, not to mention I don’t like fish. So personally, I would rather not see it in the movies. But for those who do wish to see it, hopefully it makes an appearance.
Please check out my blog for some amazing artistic depictions of the Salamander, the Sea Serpent, and the Shrake by some very talented artists on Deviant Art.
And check out the artists’ other works! And keep checking back for the countdown, there are many more fantastic beasts yet to come!

They were shot with a shotgun and put in garbage bags and thrown under a bridge," Shrake said. "If it wasn't murder, it was a really weird accident.”
