Upamaana – Rahula’s(Ref) half brother, a disciple of Buddha

Upamana is a disciple of the Buddha. He is also said to be the illegitimate son of Buddha when he was Prince Siddhartha.He is said to be the son of the first consort, Gopikar(Ref1).

In the Mahaparinirvana Sutra of the suthern tradition, there is an account of a man who appears to be Upamaana, who, at the time of Buddha's death, served beside him and fanning him, but when the spirits of the ten directions (heaven) descended to see Buddha, he stood before them and blocked their way, so that he was repelled by order of Buddha.

In the Theravada, this Upamaana was a brahmin of Shravasti, the capital of the ancient Indian state of Kosala, when he was awakened to his faith and ordained at the time of the building of the Jetavana Monastery (one of the five temples of the Buddha's reign), and attained the Abhijñā (the six divine powers: Ref2).

He is said to have served Buddha, and once, when Buddha was ill, he went to the brahmin, his protector, to obtain medicine and healed Buddha. In the same Buddhist text he is listed as one of the attendants of the Buddha.

The theory that Upamaana being the illegitimate son of Buddha is found in the Northern tradition of Buddhism and has not been confirmed so far in the Southern tradition.

優波摩那 (うはまな、梵：ウパマナ)〜ラーフラ(参照)の異母兄、ブッダの弟子

優波摩那 (うはまな、梵：ウパマナ)は、ブッダの弟子。またブッダがシッダールタ太子の時の庶子ともいわれている。第一妃(妾妃)、瞿夷(くい、梵: ゴーピカー参照1)との間の子とも伝えられる。

南伝の大般涅槃経 (だいはつねはんぎょう、梵: マハーパリニルヴァーナ・スートラ)には、ウパマナらしき人物がブッダ入滅の際、傍らに仕えて扇で煽いでいたが、十方(天)の神霊たちがブッダに会いに降りてきたとき、その前に立ち遮って道を塞いぎ、ブッダの命で退けられたという話が載っている。

テーラガーターでは、このウパマナは、古代インドのコーサラ国にあった首都、舎衛城 (しゃえいじょう、梵:シュラーヴァスティー) のバラモンとして、ブッダ在世にあった5つの寺院の1つである祇園精舎 (ぎおんしょうじゃ、梵:ジェータヴァナヴィハーラ)建立の際に、信仰に目醒め出家し、六神通 (ろくじんずう、梵: アビジュニャー参照2)を得たという記述がある。

ブッダに仕えたとされ、かつてブッダが病気になったとき、庇護者であるバラモンのところに行って薬湯をもらい、ブッダを癒したというエピソードがある。同仏典には、ブッダの侍者の一人として列挙されている。

なお、ウパマナがブッダの庶子であるという説は、北方仏教の伝統に見られるもので、南方仏教の伝統では今のところ確認されていない。

In Shravasti, India, Saumya Khandelwal (@khandelwal_saumya) documents vibrant, joyous scenes in celebration of marriage – but the reality is these brides are children. “It almost feels like a girl is born to be married here,” says the 27-year-old photojournalist. “They don’t know that there is an alternative way of life.” Saumya maintains a physical distance from Shravasti with her home in New Delhi, but her connections with the girls, and their stories, keep drawing her back to the rural city. “I think, primarily, what they need to know is that they have options in life. They should have the ability to dream,” she says.
