August 21, 2023 - Bower's Shrikethrush or Stripe-breasted Shrike-thrush (Colluricincla boweri) These shrikethrushes are found in rainforests in northeastern Australia. They eat insects and occasionally frogs, picking prey from foliage, branches, and tree trunks, and sometimes capturing it in short flights. Breeding between September and December, they build compact cup-shaped nests from rootlets, dry leaves, twigs, fronds, bark strips, spiderwebs, and tendrils in trees or vine tangles. Females lay clutches of two, or sometimes three, eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks. They are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN because of rapid population declines due to heatwaves and more extreme dry seasons caused by climate change.

June 22, 2022 - Rufous Shrikethrush (Colluricincla rufogaster)

These shrikethrushes are found in northern and eastern Australia and southern New Guinea in several types of forests, including swamps and mangroves. They eat mostly invertebrates, foraging at all levels of the forest. Pairs build nests from spiderwebs, moss, plant fibers, rootlets, stems, and other materials. Both parents care for the chicks.

October 24, 2019 - Sandstone Shrike-thrush (Colluricincla woodwardi)

These shrike-thrushes are found in shrubland and rocky areas in parts of northern Australia. They eat insects and spiders, along with some small vertebrates, foraging on the ground alone or in pairs. Nesting in crevices or under overhangs on rock ledges, they build cup-shaped nests from spinifex, twigs, bark, rootlets, and other materials.
