While I’m thinking of shrubs, can anyone help me identify these two that I saw in the woods the other day?
The top one looks like it has to be ninebark by the flowers, but the unlobed leaves don’t seem right. The stamens on the freshest flowers were tipped with red if that’s a help. (Now solved, thanks to @spatheandspadix. It is Aronia, red chokeberry. Thank you!)
And the second one had tiny tiny flowers, like you see here, with five petals? I guess, but not shaped much like petals, in leaf axils.
It is possible, just barely, that the first could be a cultivated variety that somehow got into the woods, because it was near the road. But all the plants around it were familiar woodland plants, so I think it’s wild. The other was up along the Appalachian Trail, among lichen-covered rocks, so it’s definitely native.
I need a good shrub identification book!
