Found Footage 3D
Well, haven’t had to break out a pair of red & cyan 3D glasses in a while. I’ve been going through the horror streaming site Shudder recently, where this film is currently an exclusive. Now the good thing about this one is it’s sense of identity; it knows what it wants to be, the Scream of found footage movies, and it succeeds. (I actually kind of like this better than Scream tbh) From the word go, this plays things tongue firmly in cheek, with a solid knowledge of the genre and how it works. I love that the 3D gimmick has a good reason in story (the producer of the film the characters are making just wants a gimmick for his film), but there isn’t for the film in the film (“Maybe the guy is a 3D enthusiast?” “Those aren’t a thing.”) It also has a solid character arc of a relationship in terminal freefall, with the “haunting” (or whatever this is) exacerbating matters, like the original Paranormal Activity. Having just watched Friday the 13th Part 3 again this evening (don’t ask me why, even I’m not sure), I must also praise the direction in this one for having the main 3D scares not just be anything not nailed down being pointed at the camera. I recommend checking this out on Shudder, it’s a lot of fun (it gives you options for 2D, red/cyan anaglyph 3D, and proper 3D tele versions), not least for it giving the wondrous sight of movie journalist Scott Weinberg getting killed!
