so to-y isnt like, an original member of the kamiina friend group, but he does join up with them a little bit later (im pretty sure this was set on the timeline after takeshita up and leaves them after that fallout, but that might change as im bad at setting anything in stone with firm timelines lmao). to-y is a shy and kind of a reserved kid, hes a university student studying finance and economics (which, as a sidenote, is the same thing ilusion studies there so they have a little connection that way), and he gets a little bit of extra income by working part time (most often late or night shifts) at a local spa and especially at its sauna
which is how they meet with shunma, as shunma just wants to relax one day after work and theres this cute new guy working at the sauna he usually visits and he just strikes a conversation with to-y about the place. and since its a slow night and all, why doesnt to-y join him in the sauna? which hes obviously a little flustered about, but shunma seems nice, and hes right its a very slow night, so why not lmao 💜
eventually shunma brings in more friends with him, as the calm and quiet sauna is a very good place for them to discuss pretty much everything, so one night with ueno over there with him, they'll start talking about future plans, as ueno wants to find something stable for his life (thats a really long story) again and since take left, they havent really been able to return back to the restaurant business like they had before. and it doesnt really help that shunma has moved on to this whole cafe stuff now, so they'd need a new partner with mao in all of this. at which point the conversation casually turns to to-y, and, well.. yeah hes a student, but probably not making much working part time here so.. maybe hes interested in helping them out in opening a place somewhere? and to-y is very flustered about it, that they would even suggest such a thing when they barely know him. but he cant really deny that hes at least a little bit interested, but they just tell him to think about it. to-y doesnt have to decide anything now
and shunma keeps coming back to the spa for him, both for work related reasons and something more personal, cause this sets around the time when their relationship with okatani has ended by okatani effectively ghosting him, so instead of pushing for that shunma is keeping his options open and hey, to-ys cute and seems to be single, and shunma is definitely interested lmao. it takes them a little while to get anywhere tbh, its not really until after to-y does agree to work with ueno and mao in their restaurant that shunma gets brave enough to actually ask him out, which honestly goes out much smoother than he was ever expecting lmao. and slowly things between them develop from there 💜

i dont think ive ever exclusively talked about them together so 💜
so they work together, i think thats already established; shunma manages the all-man maid cafe and okatani works there, needing a job after moving on his own after his parents throw him out as soon as he turns 18, and this is pretty much the only thing he can do with his limited experience and skills. and shunma employees a lot of other young guys in their first jobs in there anyways, so okatani fits right in there
they have a short relationship together after shunma ends a longterm relationship with takeshita and okatani breaks up with kanon (who he thought he was exclusive with but it turns out another way), so they come together and find comfort in each other and eventually that leads into sleeping together; which is a very important part for okatani, cause coming off from his first very unsuccessful relationship with kanon leaves him kinda fucked up on that front, and shunma really helps him heal from that and show him what a real relationship is supposed to look and feel like 💜
and after okatani joins damnation he drifts a little bit away from shunma, they never really officially break things off but they also never really officially were a couple, but as okatani start a sort of fwb relationship with ilusion (that eventually blossoms into something real between them), shunma can see him changing at work and when okatani gets a completely new look a little while later after joining damnation, shunma finally approaches him about basically ghosting him and just straight up asks if okatani found someone new; shunmas not mad at him, as they werent together, but he would have just liked to know. ..altho hes also been having his eyes on someone, but he'll tell okatani about to-y later lmao. but at least shunma forgiving him for all of that, okatani knows they are going to remain friends no matter what 💜
and yeah they really are just besties after that. okatani tells shunma basically everything and always goes for him when he needs help with something ilusion or sasaki cant help him with, and likewise shunma will trust okatani with a lot of things, so much so that okatani is basically a second in command in the cafe alongside with masada
oh yeah and i think its been mentioned before, but the earring okatani has was something they got together with shunma, and he keeps wearing it as a sign of their friendship

ive been wondering about this too and really just. as long as he dyes it anything but basic black its gonna be good; full blond kinda goes against the damne aesthetic but it would make sense knowing their history. red would be a really good call back but also if they wanna bleed real good thats not very optimal. even the slight blue tinted tips he had when he returned and joined damne would be interesting to see again

i wrote a lot more than i thought i would so im popping this under a read more lmao i hope this is at least a little bit interesting
shunmas transition, or at least the realization that maybe hes not a dude after all, happens pretty early on tbh; like the au follows pretty well with canon events, so all the carousel shun stuff early on were like a trigger moment for him where shunma just kinda has that "oh" moment that maybe he enjoys this a little bit more than just as a fun goof. and then the later carousel shun stuff just confirms it that yeah there IS more to this to him than just it being a bit he likes doing. so slowly he starts dressing more girly and especially in the carousel shun fit in private and hes enjoying it more and more and then going out to the world being just shunma katsumata is.. really not what he wants. it just doesnt feel right anymore to him. carousel shun, on the other hand? yeah, thats the one he really wants to be, actually 💜
it is a slow and rocky road for her tho and while okatani isnt the first person she trusts with this secret, okatani is definitely one of the first cause shes like. one of the only two women in the company and they are like besties so surely she will understand and help shunma out to figure out how shes going to tell to the rest of kamiina about this whole thing (like yeah shunma is closer to the kamiina obviously but thats also probably why telling okatani first feels safer; if she doesnt get it, shes easier to drop from shunmas friend list than her teammates and best friends, you know?) but obviously we know it goes over well with okatani and also with kamiina when shunma eventually tells them, so all is well 💜
tho shunmas transition is mostly just everything but medical, that happens much later in the timeline but she will eventually get the tits she dreams of LMAO 💜💜💜
as with okatani, with being so close to shunma and everything shes slowly starting to figure out things about herself too and while shes super unsure for a long time about stuff, basically all this stuff of wanting to try out different clothes and hairstyles and pronouns really just feels right for her. like yeah shes mostly experimenting and everything tbh, having seen shunma do this too, and while okatani isnt super dysphoric in her body and everything, just.. identifying and looking physically more like a guy just really hits it right. it just feels much more correct to hide her figure and being called a guy and.. yeah. like shes never really considered it, but once it hits, it hits hard. and feels so correct
and yeah a big part of that starts happening slightly before in the canon timeline okatani goes away for surgery for a year, like hes figuring stuff out and and while im not sure he'd like officially change genders before his return, he'd get his hair cut and wrestle more in shirts to be able to bind and whatnot. and then hes gone and returns with a completely new identity and joins damnation (which will cause a brief little shift in their dynamic with shunma cause shunmas just appalled he'd go and join the bad guys when they are BESTIES, but its quickly solved since obviously okatani still loves her and he wants to stay friends and whatever anyone says, being in damne will not keep okatani away from shunma lmao 💜 and also yeah basically nobody in damne cares, like they are an item with ilusion at this point and ilusions just glad okatani still likes him lmao, mjs maybe a little confused but hes not gonna question it, and sasaki just wants a loyal follower no matter who or what they are so. hes not too bothered about it honestly lmao)
there are other little tidbits of lore here and there, but i think this is the basic of their transition and figuring it out timelines yay 💜

andddddd lets say. the way okatani has been eyeing shunma (and shunma has also been keeping an eye out on him) ever since okatani challenged to-y for the title and eventually won it from him. just that slow burn buildup with everything, from okatani challenging immediately after hearing when and where shunma was coming back and just starting to tie their future together again to this upcoming challenge. those little gazes and taunting shunma at ringside and shunma watching his title defenses and everything. like.... they really are just tied together with the red string of fate, no matter what 💜💜💜
