This Empty House
So this is how it would be.
With Abarai out for the day, with Hisagi still on his latest mission, it was a simple affair to begin the process of goodbye. He didn't plan on bringing much with him, but he had so much to leave behind. So much to prepare, so much to dismiss.
His scant belongings hidden in the cabinet under the stove, he stared sightlessly at the empty house. Izuru ran his hand along the unmade sheets, along the kitchen counter and the back of the couch. Sentiment would not stop him, but he did take a moment to appreciate the place he had come to call home over the years.
He was distinctly acquainted with the thought that he may not be able to come back. That this may be the last farewell.
Numbness crept through his veins in the form of Abarai's pleading. If he became like ice, a statue, how could he leave? If the arms of a loved one held him back, how could he not stay? He must not entangle himself with temptation. The break must be clean, decisive.
These thoughts clouded his mind and his vision as he sat down to write a short note explaining the details of his absence. He couldn't simply disappear, he knew. He had to take steps to ensure that he wouldn't be followed.
When he had finished the letter, he folded it and stowed it beneath his pillow. Then, after a moment of hesitation, he dropped an even shorter note into the crease of the pantry door.
With a particularly potent dose of Shinten prepared, there would be nothing to stand in the way of his departure.
It's been a while since he felt that spiritual pressure. Since he heard those familiar footsteps trodding through the door, into the house. He still smelled like pine trees.
Renji had a lot of questions. A lot he wanted to say.
Best to start slow.
"You're back."
Casually goes to the dresser. Pulls out all of Shuuhei's clothes and belongings- everything he didn't take, at least- and throws them on the ground.
Knocks all of Shuuhei's books CDs off the dresser. Collects every issue of the Seireitei bulletin and throws them into the garbage.
Almost moves the guitar. Almost.
