In the relative darkness of the chamber, beyond the rows of bookshelves, the creaking of a door nearly made him jump out of his skin. Damn it. He was not supposed to be in this library at all, much less here in the middle of the night. Dara smothered the lantern and waited, listening for the sound of footsteps.
His habit of breaking and entering into Mensis in the dead of night to peruse forbidden tomes and borrow supplies seemed to have finally caught up with him. He would not regret his escapades, for they had provided much useful knowledge, but he dreaded having to escape. Crouching before the bookcase, so as to not cast even the faintest shadow, he covered his mouth and waited.
