Playing Through the Cold (F)
So in our discord server our monthly prompt this month was “Gamer x” which means could be “gamer girl” or “gamer guy”. So I took the opportunity to write something about one of my fav gaming topics, esports! Cuz, surprisingly, this happens a lot, where players get sick the day of a big match or tournament. So! Without further ado, pls enjoy.
Part 1
Nerd Flu. At every convention, every Lan event, and every tournament, there was always an awful sickness that plagued the halls and arena. The 2020 North America League of Legends Grand Finals were no exception, as 21 year old Allie Berdrau would quickly find out.
The young athlete groaned as she plucked the thermometer from her mouth and stared at the numbers. 101.4, no wonder she felt like crap. She glanced up at her appearance in the mirror and frowned, baggy eyes, pink rimmed nostrils, a pale complexion. She was sick.
Oh well, tough luck for her. Allie put the thermometer back on the nearby shelf, swiped a finger beneath her damp nose, before lifting her shirt up and over top of her bra. The brown haired player grabbed a large wad of tissues and stuffed them down her sweat pant’s pockets. It was going to be a long day.
She left the bathroom, her dark brown hair in a quickly put together pony tail. It was loose and messy, much like the clothes she wore.
“Nihren! Almost ready?!” A voice from down the stairs called.
“Coming!” She winced at the congestion in her voice and how much weaker it sounded. God she hated this already. Comms were gonna be a nightmare today.
She pulled her backpack over her shoulders and headed down the stairs. In the living room area were a group of guys, all dressed up in these suits and jerseys. “Nihren? You alright?”
“I’m sick.” She replied with a groan.
There were flashes of frowns and panicked expressions between the other guys. “How’s your voice?” One of the suited men asked.
“Hurts to speak, a lil raspy and stuffy.” She admitted with a sigh.
“I’ll go make some tea.” One of the jersey wearing guys said and quickly rushed towards the kitchens.
Allie nodded as she finished the rest of her steps down the stairs and quickly slumped next to the other guys on the couch.
“If you don’t feel up to it...”
“Save it Alteria.” She snapped quickly. “I’m not getting subbed out. I’m fine, it’s just a cold.” Allie said followed by a sharp sniff.
Her cup of hot tea soon arrived and she cupped it in her hands. The owner of the org, Aaron, he was such a dad. Always getting the 5 of them whatever they needed whether it was groceries, coffee, medicine, whatever.
“Bus will be here in 4 minutes, last chance. You’re sure you’re up for this?” Aaron asked. The 5 other guys all looked to her for some sort of answer, and she nodded. “Yeah. We got to do this.”
