What sort of films and books and shows does jude like? (If she has time for any of that)
really good question!!! in my notes folder, i acc have a section dedicated to different albums, films and books certain characters remind me of
films/shows: - SID AND NANCY WITH GARY OLDMAN!!!! one of jude's favourite films ever, this is the first one on the list in my notes as it captures the visuals and give-a-fuck attitude of the 70s punk scene SO WELL. she also loves a bit of gary oldman (i know he's a prick now, sue me) and whereas liam i'd say is a bit more mod than punk, jude's the complete opposite. while he's obsessing over quadrophenia, jude's fangirling over johnny rotten's stunning mohair jumpers (no seriously, where were those jumpers from, i'm desperate for one) - liam's influence means films like quadrophenia, blow-up, a hard days night and alfie have lived on her vhs shelf since the early 90s. again, jude's more a punk rocker than anything else however due to these films and liam's presence in her life, she does have her little swinging london patti boyd phase in the mid 90s where she rewatches these on repeat and steals a lot of outfit ideas. - in the modern day, i think she's got a real soft spot for GOOD biopics. she hates bohemian rhapsody with a passion but definitely steals lucy boynton's eye makeup looks from the film and denies it vehemently to anyone who asks (her daughters AHEM... who said that?). she DOES love closer the ian curtis biopic, a complete unknown, gainsbourg and nowhere boy. her FAVOURITE however, has to be 24 hour party people (2002). she finds that shit so funny, and she will spend the entire time reciting every scene line for line because she's rewatched it SO MANY TIMES. - don't even ask about better man. she was mortified when she found out robbie put her in it and even more mortified to hear the american actress who plays her attempt a yorkshire accent. - jude likes british shows, she's a simple girl. things like the royle family, shameless uk, the thick of it, come fly with me, the office etc. they all give her a good hearty laugh and are easy watching with the family after tea. - more modern stuff she's into is ted lasso, brassic (SHE FUCKING LOVES BRASSIC), this is england. i think she appreciates the nostalgia it gives her as she misses the north a lot and she also wants her family to remember where she came from and that just cause they live in london doesn't make them posh cunts.
books: - i imagine she's read quite a lot of the bronte sisters throughout her life, considering her upbringing in leeds, it'll have been shoved down her throat a bit in school. but i don't think she particularly enjoys them when she's young, however as she gets older and more time frees up she becomes fascinated with all the gothic yorkshire imagery - considering her punk values, i have a lot of dystopian classics like animal farm, a clockwork orange, the children of men, the iron heel etc. jude is INCREDIBLY critical of the government which isn't something i think i've expressed enough in my writing. the reason kirkstall abbey does so well is because practically every song has an element of anarchy and social commentary in the lyricism which aim to ridicule/expose the incompetence of the government and institutions in power when it comes to dealing with the working class/north/vulnerable youth. again, i'm not sure whether jude will have read all these novels in her youth but most certainly by the end of the 90s she'll have fully fledged out her media literacy within the dystopian/punk genre. - running with the dystopian theme JUDE LOVES FEMINIST LITERATURE. mini spoiler ahead but something happens around the mid to late 90s that sort of kickstarts jude's journey into re-evaluating her place in society as a girl after the whole laddy britpop culture starts to die down. so i imagine she gains a keen interest in writers like margaret attwood, sylvia plath, toni morrison, virginia woolf. - in all, jude's someone who appreciates the old. her biggest inspirations are things from the past (apart from pulp and oasis, the musical loves of her life) so although she has particular soft spots for contemporary writers like irvine welsh, nick hornby, alice walker, sue townsend etc. they don't come close in her mind to the legends of the game. i do think by 2025 as she gets older, things like trainspotting and the queen and i become more influential upon her but in the 90s and 00s, they don't have too much of an impact upon her.
