Christopher "Genius" Nolan
Chaos | Reel Read | Christopher Nolan and his breathtaking movies, through the eyes of Siddharthan. The avid Nolan fan talks about the brain behind the Batman trilogy and more.
'Insomnia' introduced me to Christopher Nolan. Although he had scripted and directed Following and The Memento, I became familiar with Nolan’s work firstly through “Insomnia”. It is not often that a script betters the performance of two amazing actors like Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Actors gifted with the widest range of emotions and scintillating screen presence, accomplished veterans with Academy awards. But, Nolan bettered them both as far as Insomnia was concerned.
His next was the first installment of a trilogy about The Dark Knight of Gotham. I was disappointed when I heard the news and thought that a brilliant script writer had fallen prey to the vicious gravity of box office fame and success. But when I experienced “Batman Begins”, I realized my gross error in judgment. Batman Begins was the first super hero movie that emphasized on the human side of a super hero. “Batman Begins” became, in my mind, the benchmark for other super hero movie makers.
As I was eagerly awaiting the next installment of The Dark Knight trilogy, he went on to make “The Prestige”. As diametrically opposite as it can be from his previous film, “The Prestige” adapted from a novel, reflected the struggle for fame between two rival magicians. Nolan, much like his lead character of his trilogy has a taste for theatricality and deception and “The Prestige” proved to be a worthy platform to showcase his mettle.
And then, “The Dark Knight” arrived with “The Joker”. The reception to the second installment signaled the acceptance and admiration for Nolan’s cinematic brilliance. Its humungous success at the box office simply meant that Nolan had to find a better script for the finale. Most critics thought “The Dark Knight” was his best while I was wondering why his other movies, which were better, did not receive the same success.
As always, he left everyone in the lurch and moved on to make “Inception”. Another highly appreciated film at the box office and in the critique circuit. Again, radically different from his previous work. The Brit in him chose to have a Bond like approach to his film making process. It was apparent that he likes to keep everyone guessing. So, after the paraphernalia over Inception had subsided, it was time for the end of the Trilogy.
The Dark Knight Rises rose above every expectation. The script had its flaws, but the flaws were noted only because we were in Batman’s or to be more apt, Nolan’s world. His scripting ability made the fictitious Gotham city seem like any other city in the real world. It was an ode to the only super hero who is human. The Dark Knight’s trilogy can never be bettered. Nolan’s Batman can never be forgotten.
If in the future, one should attempt to bring Batman on screen, one can only hope they do not embarrass themselves in the process. For in his greatest achievement yet, Nolan has attained immortality for and through The Dark Knight trilogy. Christopher Nolan is one of those very rare men who can better their piece de resistance time after time and leave you wanting for more.
