What a wonderful weekend, taking part in the panel discussion at the opening of the new exhibition "Work and Workers" at @sidegallery1977. I've been an admirer of the Side Gallery for so long now, so it's slightly surreal to see one of my images on the poster for this one. A very special moment for me, on my photographic journey so far. Most importantly, it's a great exhibition, featuring some amazing images from an archive that spans over one hundred years of photography in the North East. Production line, Nissan Motors, Sunderland. I'm delighted to be showing this image at Newcastle's Side Gallery, as part of their "About The North: Imagined Dialogues" exhibition, part of the Great Exhibition of The North. The cast of participants is wonderful, so many great photographers who have all worked in and chronicled our beloved North. I took this image in 2012 as part of a project I was doing about manufacturing in Britain. Despite the widely held view of The Decline of British Manufacturing, the value of manufacturing has steadily increased since the war. It has changed from a low value, labour intense activity to more of a high value, high tech activity. The Nissan factory in Sunderland was built on the heritage and skill base of the mines, and is one of the region's success stories, bringing wealth to the region. The factory now faces an uncertain future in the light of Brexit, for which Sunderland voted.
