Leisure Time and Tourism
Activities in Northern Cyprus
Introduction by Ralph Kratzer
There are many ways to pass the time in Northern Cyprus, either as a tourist or as a resident.
Of course you can first of all spend the days with idling, lying by the pool or on one of the beautiful beaches of the island, have a little swim and enjoy a drink.
But you can also spend the time with activities like all kinds of water sports, biking or hiking, Jeep safaris etc etc.
Kyrenia and Besparmak
Not to forget the beautiful landscape and the many attractions and landmarks that can be admired over here.
All who do not want to undertake such leisure time activities or sightseeing tours on their own, can trust in one of the many tourism agencies in North Cyprus.
Austrian-born Franz Bauernhofer, member of the association The Foreign Residents in the TRNC (TFR), showed me the current program of his agency and sent me the following additional information which I want to share with our readers:
“With our agency SIDETOUR we put our emphasis on showing our guest the more unknown side of the island off the beaten track, share the local´s lifestyle and support the small scale community and village businesses.
As from my experience as a tourist guide, this kind of sustainable tourism is best to enjoy in small groups with quality guides. We are one of the rare agencies that serve Northern as well as Southern Cyprus.
For active guests Northern Cyprus offers especially wonderful walking and biking trails.
For walkers very interesting is the recently opened Besparmak Trail (Turkish: bes parmak = 5 finger) from western Cape Korucam to the eastern Cape Andreas. The Trail follows the Five Finger Mountains 260km in 18 days. The trail is very rich in unique sensations, from the Maronite village of Kormacit (Korucam) over the impressive castles of Saint Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara, the magnificent church of the Antiphonitis Monastery to the villages and remote landscapes of the Karpaz peninsula.
For bikers there is either demanding or relaxing dirt tracks or small village roads with almost no traffic. On this tracks, you can also travel from West to East on your bike like you do by walking on the Besparmak Trail.
Best season for active travel is spring time when the island is lush green and you find millions of rock roses along the trails as well as more than 30 kinds of wild orchids.
In our office in Canbulat Street 7A in Kyrenia (just opposite the old Market Bandabulya on the street passing by the Liman Casino) our senior boss Halil Tahiroglu offers also all insurances, flight tickets and visa assistance – since 1987!
We also organize outgoing tours from Cyprus with a local tour leader to various destinations like South Africa, Thailand, Central Europe, Georgia and Turkey.
Sidetour is managed by Özgür Tahiroglu (Turkish, English), Houssem Belloum (Arabic, French, German, English, Turkish) and Franz Bauernhofer (German, English, Turkish).”

Sidetour: Exploring Philadelphia's Backyard
The Philadelphia Inquirer. 6.6.2013.
Guided tours, when successful, are a sort of archaeological excavation. You could walk the path and look at the same objects on your own, but with a leader, all the behind-the-scenes stories are revealed.
In a city as rich in culture and history as Philadelphia, guided tours abound - in Old City, along the rivers, in neighborhoods, underground.
But there's a new way to see your surroundings, and it has less to do with showcasing the city's highlights than it does with getting at the guts of the town by following the lead of an expert.
Twitter, Jauntsetter, Sidetour, and Us
Last week a funny thing happened: I entered a drawing to win admission into a fancy cocktail party at The Pierre Hotel hosted by Jauntsetter.com via twitter. Dorothy, founder of Jauntsetter then went to the de Porres site, she liked what she saw. From there she recommended us to the fine folks at Sidetour.com. Today Sidetour kindly featured us on their site. We've reserved four tickets for their subscribers, which you're more than welcome to. In addition to ours, there appears to be a number of fun things to do in the city. Oh, and I won those tickets to that party and had a blast. You can purchase tickets to the next de Porres via Sidetour with this link.
Tesla Model S Named Motor Trend Car of the Year
For the first time in history, a car without a traditional engine won Motor Trend's Car of the Year.
The recipient of this year's award? The Tesla Model S.
Here's a few reasons why: It goes from zero-to-sixty in under four seconds and features a 17-inch electronic touchscreen on the dash. It's also fully electric and able to drive up to 250 miles without a single charge.
But with a starting price tag of close to $50,000, it's unlikely that you'll make this purchase on a whim.
Something you can do on a whim? Get behind the wheel for a whole lot less when you test drive the Tesla Model S on a SideTour.
