The bruise on Sidney’s side was a nasty red where Geno’s hockey stick snapped across his skin. Yellow, black and blue lined the mark, stretching across his back and peaking into his sides. Sidney had to twist his body at a weird angle to see all of it. Under the fluorescent lights in the bathroom, it looked worse than when it first started discoloring.

Geno doesn’t really think of himself as nosy. Sure, he enjoys a bit of occasional gossip as much as the next professional hockey player, but the wisdom of his ever-increasing years, and one too many moments of learning something he really, really wished he hadn’t, has taught him not to pry.

So, when Sid plops down next to him at the patio table with a contented sigh and spends the next few minutes silently, slowly pecking out texts on his phone, Geno doesn’t ask who, exactly, is putting that pleased smile on Sid’s face. Of course, Geno wonders—that’s not a crime. After all, he thinks, staring around at Sid’s very full yard, letting the rabble of his teammates’ conversations and their children’s gleeful screeches wash over him, so many of Sid’s favorite people are already here. Even Sid’s parents, visiting for the first few games of the new season, are over by the grill, locked in what looks like a very serious conversation about the state of the burgers with Rusty.

It could be Sid’s sister, Geno guesses. Or Flower, or Jake, or some other former Penguin Sid fondly keeps up with. Or frankly—with that smile, that happy crinkle of Sid’s eyes—it could very well be someone at PPG Paints keeping Sid updated on the state of the ice.

Geno’s thoughts flow in the same winding, curious loops, amusing himself with the question without any real intent, until one of Karl’s tiny, blonde-headed children screams over the rest of the pack—

“Sid! Sid, watch me!”

“I see you, bud!” Sid calls back, setting his phone down on the table to wave.

“No, come here,” she whines, stomping her little bare foot in the grass. “Please?”

“Oh, well, please,” Sid echoes, sending Geno a conspiratory smile as he gets to his feet. “I guess I have to.”
