Elektron SidStation Filter Distortion

Exploring the Elektron SidStation, running it in polyphonic mode with 3 voices of PWM waveform. The focus here is on the filter section, which is well-known for its gritty, distorted character.

The SidStation is a synthesizer powered by the MOS 6581 SID chip from the Commodore 64.

I’ve added some tape delay from a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo and a bit of room reverb from a Chase Bliss Audio & Meris CXM 1978, to give the sound some "air" and stereo width.

I’ve been watching a lot of 80s horror movies in the last couple of weeks.  Couple that with listening to John Carpenter’s new album Lost Themes that came out on Tuesday — I found myself inspired to try to write a horror movie score of my own.

Equipment used: Elektron Sidstation:  Paddy part and bells. Moog Werkstatt:  Controlled and modulated by the Arturia Microbrute, making the wobbly bass sound.  (also ran through a cheap distortion pedal I bought at Target years ago when I thought I’d learn to play guitar) Korg Volca Keys:  The repetitive 8-note sequence. Concertmate 990:  a 1990s Radio-Shack branded Casio keyboard that is the source of the drum sounds. Software used: Akai iMPC Pro:  Drum sequencing. 4Pockets Meteor:  Midi sequencing, recording. Klevgr. Svep:  Chorusing on the Sidstation Pad. Holderness Stereo Designer:  Widening the stereo field of the Volca. Adobe Audition:  Final eq and mixing.
