Recuerdo aquel viernes 29 de diciembre del año 2006, eran las 7:00 de la noche y allí estabas tú, radiante y hermosa recuerdo que tu luz opacaba la luz de Luna y tu sonrisa penetraba mi alma haciendo latir rápido mi corazón entre las ovaciones de todo aquel que hizo presencia en aquel lugar para presenciar delante de Dios la unión de 2 personas que habían decidido declarar amor delante de Dios para siempre. Sorry my response is so late. I believe I was out of town when I received this, but a good message needs a reply. I currently own four books related to Malcolm X, and as of now, I’ve only read one. Just speaking about my personal experience, I began with The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley. Everyone told me to start with Alex Haley’s autobiography. I started there, without allowing myself to take the easy way out and watch the Spike Lee movie. One thing about it, this book comes off as a great book about how cool Malcolm X became, at times. If you’re going to read this book, understand the film is adapted from the book, but it probably doesn’t do the entire job.

Tumblr actually introduced me to a different biography of Malcolm X. Malcolm: The Life of a Man Who Changed Black America was offered as a more comprehensive telling of his life than ‘Autobiography’. I convinced one of the people I troll in the bookstore to order a copy for me, and he ordered one for himself. Bruce Perry’s book is more detailed, and on my reading list. From what he told me, the book is dense, but not a narrative. It’s definitely more information than stories. There are almost 200 pages of notes. Bruce interviewed a lot of people who knew Malcolm before he converted to Islam. So you will get more about the man, and not the martyr.

Manning Marable wrote a nearly 600 page book about Malcolm X’s life, or as someone described to me, “how much he didn’t appreciate Alex Haley’s take on Malcolm X”. Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention does exist as an alternative to other biographies. I was curious about this book, but I didn’t get into it, because I had just finished Alex Haley’s book and wasn’t committing to 600 pages of shit. (Respectfully, lol.) Will there come a time where I want to check this out? Possibly. I can’t right now, though. In fact, it’s not a book I own, so I won’t suggest it to you., because I’m kind, lol. Be advised, since you now have knowledge of it, many people do not like this book. It was a bit controversial.

This year I was able to purchase The Diary of Malcolm X: El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, 1964. (Praise eBay for this one, bruh. Included the link to the Kindle version because Amazon be fakin’ on the hardcopy, yo.) My friend mentioned that he was reading this on Twitter. (I’m going to stop myself here and just let you know I am such a dork for trolling people about books, lol.) He had me searching for this book for MONTHS! I’m very glad I have it, and I do just want to read it to see what he gained in his travels to Africa and the Middle East. I enjoying reading people’s experiences written in their own words. What’s better than a diary for that type of thing? I wouldn’t start there, but if you’re really into Malcolm, I’d suggest it to anyone.

My last book about Malcolm is one I recently found in a box of books with a bookmark in it. By Any Means Necessary is a book of speeches and writings. I write rap lyrics and a whole lot of things, so I like speeches for historical context in my various works. I’m also a militant, so I believe strongly in radical thinking. This book is on my current fall reading list, because I started it and never finished it. This isn’t a very long book, so I should be able to knock this out fairly quickly. Again, I wouldn’t begin here, but if you’re going to dig Malcolm, read some speeches and some of his writings. He was such a gifted orator. These are just books that I’ve browsed, bought or read. I’m no expert, and also not a bad person to ask. Hope this has helped. Sorry this is long. And thanks for writing!
