Okay. So. Important thoughts on anteaters.
There are 4 extant species of anteater.
3 of them, the silky anteater and the two Tamandua species, are tree anteaters. And like yeah. You look at that thing and it's like y'know what. That actually makes sense in your head. Like of course they look weird, but their entire body structure is for arboreal living. They've got bodies that curve and arch for flexibility, claws that curve around branches, and a prehensile tail. And we're used to seeing funky lil arboreal guys. So the snoot just curves with the body. It's part of the general "loop" their body plans form. Like here's a pic of a Northern Tamandua from wikipedia:
You see this thing, a tree anteater, and your brain is like Ah Yes. This is That Thing. The Kind Of Thing that is similar to monkeys and squirrels and possums and civets. Head is funky, a particularly funky version of it, but entire body is muscle noodle. For trees. Muscle noodles live in trees. Your brain KNOWS it's a funky thing. But it's a kind of funkiness that it's already been trained to handle. Your brain sees the loopy body and is like yes. Loopy body? Loopy head make sense with loopy body. This is Forest Creature. Is meat noodle. We're good here 👍
Now. The Giant Anteater is the only living species of ground anteater. It is also, as it's name suggests, the largest extant anteater by FAR. So it's a stocky guy. Sturdy frame. Got some heft in the step. A proper beast.
So ya see this thing. And your brain takes in the beast. You first register its frame, its gait, its bod. And you're seeing this:
And your brain loves this. It's like. Ah yes. Classic. I know this one. This is a Ground Beast. This is a blocky, stocky Ground Beast. Big Ground Beast have Big Ground Beast features. Will naturally follow from build. Large bushy tail is neato too. Got some interesting feet on it but that's how Big Ground Beast works sometimes. Big Ground Beast have Big Ground Beast blocky head. I, your brain, will settle into an adequate expectation that it is Big Ground Beast through and through, which is Normal Thing. This is what I know. It is an image that invokes the deer and pig and cow and buffalo and antelope. I am left defenseless. I am not expecting funkiness. I am not expecting noodle. Big Ground Beast have Chunky Head.
And then. And THEN. Your neurons spin. Your brain quivers. Your seeing bits have finally fully conveyed the relevant information to the thinking bits. And you are flummoxed. Flabbergasted. BLINDSIDED. For the Big Ground Beast does NOT have Big Ground Beast Head after all. This beast has been revealed to your cortex, fully absorbed, and shown itself, to have:
The. Absolute. SNOUT of it all. The taper. The vwoooooooop. The TUBE of it all. A head so tiny, yet so very, VERY long. You let your guard down. You let your expectations fill in the gaps. You set yourself up. And now, the Ground Beast has smacked you right upside the human tendency to drive patterns, whacking you from great distance with a snoot the length of Chile.
You lay defeated. Flummoxed. Dumbfounded. Perplexed. You were unprepared. And the Giant Anteater, the noble denizen of Neotropic forest floors and grasslands, has bested you.
