#tbt to pre-1980 when #mtumunhum was still resplendent in all its operational, Cold War radar tower glory. It’s been said that the 1950s technology that powered this behemoth can now reside on an iPhone. At an elevation of 3,500ft, the remaining tower (now with protected, historic status) has served as a visual landmark in Silicon Valley orientation during the decades since. Presently, the former USAF base is an open space preserve with hiking trails and a 360 degree view of the Bay Area that includes the Pacific Ocean sandwiched between the San Francisco & Monterey peninsulas. #radartower #siliconvalley #sanjose #militaryhistory #coldwar #sierraazul (at Mount Umunhum)
