Monster Popularity Contest: Legends of Innistrad
Well, it's been quite some time since I last posted anything here (all the way back in April, in fact!) but my long summer hiatus is finally over, and I'm happy to be back on a regular schedule once again. That starts with new Weekly Releases, including this brand-new series of monsters from Innistrad, the gothic-horror setting for Magic: the Gathering. Terrify your players with Kurbis, the huanted treefolk; whip-up a mad science mini-boss using Oglor, Devoted Assistant; or put your players firmly in celestial crosshairs using Sigarda, Font of Blessings!
And if you'd like to get early access to more releases like this, vote in weekly polls to decide what I make next, and get access to exclusive patron-only content (like a d100 table of Local Tavern Meals for your fantasy bar of choice), all for as little as $2/month, you can sign up to support me over on Patreon!
Man. sigarda has got to be like, the most traumatized archangel. Around ~1000 years ago on Innistrad, a new kid on the block rocked up with a baseball bat (Avacyn) and said "your sister's a heretic, I'm going to kill her, because she made a pact with a demon," except the new angel on the block couldn't be sensed by any of them and had godlike powers that had seemingly come from Nowhere. Sigarda, Bruna, and Gisela were like "well yeah, she IS a heretic. But also she's our sister so maybe don't" and Avacyn was like "well tough shit" and then she just,
went and killed Liesa
who is explicitly stated to have been the most powerful of the four archangel sisters. so you KNOW the other three were like "holy fucking shit, this new angel is TERRIFYING"
and Avacyn then went on to inspire the Avacynian church because oh yeah
THAT HADN'T EVEN HAPPENED YET
am I the only one losing their entire mind over how one of Avacyn's first actions was to just. slaughter an archangel sister. like lmfao
anyway, Sigarda had to just Live With That for a while, and then fast forward to the Eldrazi invasion, her two sisters get corrupted and transformed into a horror meld monster, and yeah Avacyn dies, but then someone wielding Avacyn's fucking spear kills her two corrupted sisters
And in Midnight Hunt, she goes and gets into a fight with Sorin because Sorin is being a moody bastard and won't let the Gatewatch have the macguffin they need to stop the Eternal Night, WHICH LEAVES HER WEAK ENOUGH for Olivia to later capture her and stick her
in
a
BIRD CAGE.
(yeah Sigarda got out of it later, all ended well for her there, but like. LOL)
So anyway Sigarda is now the only surviving archangel (that she's aware of; Liesa is back, but she hasn't made Sigarda aware of that yet) on Innistrad. INNISTRAD. and she repeatedly gets her ass handed to her by vampires and has watched all of her sisters die
obsessed with the traumatized archangel of life
on INNISTRAD.
you're doing great honey I'm so sorry you got saddled with that life lmfao

Cradle of Safety
Image description begin: The cropped version of the art on the Cradle of Safety card, showing a young baby with light brown skin, black hair, and black eyes swaddled in blankets and feathers. The baby is looking offscreen to their right (our left). A golden medallion depicting a heron is on the baby's chest. Outside of the cradle are several lit candles. End image description.
This is a spell for the protection of a child, invoking the power of Sigarda, angel leader of the Flight of Herons on Innistrad.
This is not a light warding. This is an intense protection spell in which you (yes, you!) can be the scapegoat to protect a baby or small child from magical harm.
I will not be offering many alternative tools. This is from a solo casting where I was going all out.
Tools
Sigarda imagery - this can include cards, art, or even pictures of angels or herons (for invoking Sigarda during the spell)
Names of the child and parent(s)/guardian(s) - to work as the taglock (the spell will have to be cast separately for more than one child)
Sodalite - Blue energy and protection
Your own energy - varies (mine was Blue for this spell, but you may connect differently with different colors)
Astrology plate
Tarot card representing child - whether physically or personality-wise
Feathers - craft feathers are a good option, a fan is a good alternative for the sake of air
MTG enchanting board
Step By Step
Put the energy sources on the enchanting board and the tarot card representing the child on the Fifth House part of the astrology plate.
Channel energy from the energy sources to the tarot card.
Chant the following to invoke Sigarda's aid:
Oh little [child name], Beloved child of [name(s) of parent(s)/guardian(s)]. Guarded by angel feathers and magic, You shall be safe from spells that bane. Sigarda, Host of Herons, the Shadow Slayer, Protect this child through this spell's effects. Sigarda the True, the Hope of the Lost, Protect this child from the dangers in the darkness.
Oh little [child name], May my strength be your strength, May my shield be your shield, May my power be your power, And may my heart guard yours Through this spell's effects. May you grow safe, may you grow strong, And may you grow up loved.
Close out the spell as normal.
My Notes
To switch out for a different entity, replace the Sigarda imagery and feathers with the appropriate alternatives. You should also replace the name and epithet in the chant.
As usual, chosen names of any variety (trans, magical, etc) will have more effect than birth names if there's little or no connection to the birth name.
