1963 IH Sightliner
Well i’ll be damned if’n it aint an old Sightliner! I’ve never seen one irl. The sightliner’s a cool concept, but was unpopular for numerous reasons. In hot weather, the driver got sunburned legs. In cold weather, the driver got cold legs from the windows. Safety was probably the main reason for the design’s unpopularity, as well as the overall general decline of the cabover. The lower windows were susceptible to rocks thrown up by other cars, and thieves would smash them to reach in and grab whatever was in the cab. Pedestrians were looking right at your crotch if your fly was open or you were doin a little scratchin’ (hey, truckers gotta itch sometimes). Also, when you pulled up behind a car the glare would send a laser beam right into the car driver’s eyes. Oncoming cars’ headlights would shine into the cab. They were hard to get into (no steps). Add that to the other issues that killed the cabover- hard to maintain, and increasing allowable lengths on the US highway system- and this neat idea was doomed. #sightliner
tallbike1: No way! Love those things never seen one in person fucking awesome
johnnypayphone@tallbike1 I know there’s probably only a handful left around. I’m gonna knock on the guys door on my way past next time and see if he’ll let me look at it
tallbike1@johnnypayphone I'm sure he would be willing to talk about it I bet there's not too many people that stop and ask him. There was one with a box on the back that sold at auction a couple years ago that was used in some movie.
doggonecyclistas: Sweet!! The cabover is attributed to Cleveland’s very own... viktor schreckengost: the “ american da vinci “ (see the book of the same name) the cabover still survives in the isuzu npr city truck... he also did at least 26 bikes for murray and columbia.. including the beloved “Spaceliner”.. check out his ceramics too! Cool stuff!!
johnnypayphone@doggonecyclistas I was familiar with the Spaceliner but had no idea about this guy!
