San Fransokyo. A fusion city heavily inspired by Japanese culture on the coast of California. Primarily known for it’s scientific achievements from the brilliant youth of tomorrow. Oh, and also for their own unique fast food restaurant chain called Noodle Burger. But recently it had also become recognized in the world of undercover crime and vigilante heroes. In her personal opinion, Carmen found the gadgets of this Big Hero 6 team to be incredible feats of technology ... but in terms of tactical skill and execution, there’s definitely room for improvement. Unfortunately her first trip to “Japantown” would not be for tech demos or for burger tastings. According to Player’s intel the area’s leading production company Krei Tech had been secretly working on a type of mega data storage microchip that, if fallen into the wrong hands, could easily be used to create robotic weapons of great impact. He also told Carm that the prototype was recently moved from the lab and should be in a safe, hidden somewhere in Alistair Krei’s office, on the highest floor of the Krei Tech building.

Carmen winced as she landed against a glass roof that reverberated a thud into the night air. Modern architecture proved to be more difficult for her to scale than historical buildings she had in the past, hopping from stone wall to wooden roof built at simple right angles without much noise or instability. However these slippery metallic skyscrapers with their curved surfaces and lack of ledges to easily grapple onto she feared would ( literally ) be her downfall. But she didn’t have much of a choice thanks to the security measures throughout the inside of Krei Tech, so she continued on running and jumping with more care, as high as she could get on foot before she had to climb those last few floors with suction cups as if she were a mountaineer with makeshift rocks to hold onto. Along the way she heard some of the busiest ambient noise she ever had from a city: electronic buzz, robotic hums, moving gears, and the whirs of progress. That plus the noise coming from the floating wind turbines kept her from worrying about who could possibly still hear her ... or from noticing that she was being followed.

Once she reached her destination the rest was a snap for Carmen. Break a window latch here, decrypt some security codes there, use fingerprints from the desk to trick the recognition scanners ... Child’s play for a professional thief. Her gloved fingers carefully plucked the microchip that Player described from it’s dock with a satisfying click. ❝ Gotcha. ❞ As soon as the word left her lips she heard something ( or someone ) take a single step on the cold floor behind her and immediately turned around. The moonlight was enough to make out the shape of a figure she’d seen on the news. And here she was, clearly breaking and entering, holding something that didn’t belong to her. Her eyes darted at the microchip she held beside her head and then back to the other with a shy smile.

      stars, this guy’s gonna be the death of her. honestly. 

      ❛ you can’t have ‘ me time ’ in my garage, fred. ❜ she says, lifting her hands up to make finger quotes. it’s only then she remembers she doesn’t have her gloves on, and all it takes is the overhead light glinting off of her metal hand for her to drop them back to her side, joke forgotten. screw your head back on, cinder, he doesn’t care. 

      luckily, the laugh that bubbles out of him at her words seems to do the trick, and she’s right back to staring down at him with a look that would suit a scolding mother more than an irritated teenage cyborg. if you didn’t know them, you probably would think cinder was the older of the two. she places her hands on her hips, kicking at his side ( gently, but not too gentle ) with her eyebrows raised. she hopes he can’t see the amusement she’s desperately trying to keep out of her expression, but the grin on his face proves that she’s more transparent than she thinks she is. she gives in eventually, offering him a small smile as she pads the bottom of her boot against his shirt again.

         ❛ noooooooo, alkaaaaaaaa — ❜ her whining is cut off by alka wrapping her up in the aforementioned hug, and despite her front of insisting against it, she absolutely needs this, and her friend does usually know what’s best — especially when it comes to science. she lets herself melt against the taller girl, resting her cheek against her chest with a sigh. 

         blue suppresses a giggle when she hears the soft whispers of alka counting the seconds going by into blue’s hair ( making sure she hits that minute, obviously. she’s never been one to half ass anything scientific ), and she shuts her eyes, doing her best to quiet the storm in her mind and focus on her friend. she won’t deny it, she feels better already.

08. at a hilltop watching the sunrise.

       this has become a habit of hers, though she’s not quite sure when it began. 

       not particularly this, on second thought, though. or so she figures. she’s usually content to watch the stars from her window, or sometimes the garden, surrounded by the flowers. on occasion, she’ll climb up to the roof wrapped up in a blanket, feeling so close to the stars that she sometimes felt she could reach out and touch them.

       but that wasn’t enough tonight. her chest still ached, and the swirling, uncomfortable something in her gut didn’t fade the way it usually did. 

       ( sonya doesn’t want to admit it, but there’s a small voice in the back of her mind that suggests it may have something to do with the conversation she’d had with natasha only hours before. natasha may have been physically healed by now, but the rift between them that had torn open when her dear cousin had ripped at her heartstrings, burning the wound with the venom lacing her words — that hadn’t healed yet. they’ve forgiven each other, and yet — it still feels like there’s a chasm between them. )

       she wasn’t quite sure what it was that had tugged her away from the house to a hill when she’d decided fresh air might help, rather than her usual instinct to stay close, but she’s glad she listened to it. it was as if whatever had coiled itself around her insides slowly unraveled with every step she took away from the house, and she’d found herself running, dress hiked up to her knees and normally tidily tied up hair blowing out wildly behind her. she didn’t realize it at the time, but she’d been smiling. 

       and she was still smiling when she reached the top of the hill, breathlessly staring up at the moon and her stars, somehow closer than ever. she all but dropped down to the grass, barely noticing the dew seeping in through the thin fabric of her dress.

       and hours later, sonya still sits, knees pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped tight around them, coat discarded in the grass despite the chill of the early autumn morning. had it not been for the slow rise of the sun in the horizon, warm light peeking through the blanket of night, she’s not sure she would’ve realized how long she’d been there. there’s no harm in staying to watch the sunrise before she finally returns home, she figures — it’s been so long since she’s seen one. she’s lost in the shifting colours of the sky when she’s pulled out of her thoughts by the sound of footsteps behind her before a body sits down next to her, and she blinks in surprise when she turns and recognizes who it is instantly. the look in his eyes insinuates that he may not have slept through the night either.

       she offers fedya a rosy-cheeked smile in greeting, her blush only deepening when he wordlessly lifts the black coat from his shoulders and drapes it over her own. she thanks him with a nod, turning back to the view. as she watches the sun climb through the sky, night and day intermingling for one brief, beautiful moment, she leans her head on his shoulder, and she doesn’t stop herself from reaching for his hand when he does the same.

        she lays on her bed, paying only partial attention to the youtube video playing on her phone as she watches the snow fall through her window. her apartment is often empty — perks of living without a roommate, duh — but it somehow feels emptier knowing that her best friends are currently enjoying their night with family and friends. while she normally wouldn’t hesitate to shamelessly crash anyway, she feels like interrupting a holiday celebration just wouldn’t be fair. but she can’t ignore the hollow feeling in her chest, and if she doesn’t figure out how to fill it soon, she thinks it might eat her alive. 

        there has to be someone else who’s not busy too, right? there’s no way everyone she knows is  — oh. oh, yeah. 

        ophelia wonders how she didn’t immediately think of him.

        she rolls over onto her stomach, exiting the video and opening up her imessage app. gnawing on her lip, ophelia opens the familiar contact, hoping that her gut instinct is right.

      A THUNDEROUS CRACK ECHOES THROUGH THE STREETS as the terrain shudders before breaking out in a row of sharp rocks, pinning down the adversary they’d been chasing -- held in the air as the nanites she now controls form a rocky prison that remains nearly inescapable so long as she’s in control. stomp of her foot sends spires from the street in a row that leads to one jagged && deadly point held at the criminal’s throat. 

      perhaps this isn’t who she’s looking for in her strides toward retribution for what happened to her && what had put her father in a coma. the tech embedded in her chest pulses with heat && electricity as she wills the rock formation closer -- but she’s stopped as her companion’s voice cuts through the air like a knife that stills her every motion.

      HEROES are supposed to protect -- HEROES weren’t THERE for her or her father !! SHE had to be the one to do something about it. SHE had to be the one to be there for those who couldn’t be there for themselves -- && she needed to make whoever it was PAY for ruining her life. for changing her body for what was starting to seem like forever with no release of this thing from her chest  (  taking away any say she had in her own life  )   -- the burnt && charred arm that stayed in a process of rapid decay && regeneration that won’t ever heal over. VILLAINS took her life away -- they took the control she had over her own destiny && she was taking it back.

      ❝  NO !!  ❞

      her voice is loud -- confident && filled with a rage that wasn’t her usual. cyan curls bounce in the harsh movement of her head to turn toward him -- unnaturally blue eyes settling defiantly to lock with his. she isn’t thinking straight -- not now -- she’s driven by something else; call it rage, call it revenge or the nanites slowly ingraining themselves with her body ever since the accident.

       ❝  i’ve never felt more in control, fred ! there’s nothing to snap out of -- i have to finish this. no one else is going to -- && then what ? this guy goes free && hurts someone ? KILLS someone ? do you really want th--  ❞

      the distraction makes her lose control -- a slip up from still being so new to this && still learning to control her new powers -- && she’s kicked in the stomach, sent falling from the rock she stands on into the asphalt of the street below with a loud thud. she’s hurt && it’s her own fault for not being able to control it yet -- but she still tries to get back up, hand thrown forward in attempts to will the rocks but they won’t budge now && she lets out a frustrated yell.
