Loki and "Siguna" ;)
Source: CKLA Grade 3 Knowledge 6: Gods, Giants, and Dwarves
I just hopped on this group recently and the first question posed was something I was questioning myself about lately! How marvelous!
Three years ago I became acquainted with the pagan community. I was familiar with the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian pantheons (they were passions of mine), but I met a boy who introduced me to the Norse pantheon. How so? His nickname/persona in a multitude of things was 'Loki'. I didn't know the name Loki but it intrigued me and he said he loved Norse mythology. I recognized that as Odin and Thor. I was still in high school and one day I came across The Children of Odin in our school library (and I will admit that I actually stole that book- it had been terribly abused and I still believe I rescued it). It's also a quite queer happening of coming across that book. I was just skimming books (no where near the mythology section) and it was just stuck amongst the books. I take it now as a sign. ANYWAY. I read and read and read that book. I became somewhat familiar with all the gods and goddesses, especially Sigyn. I assume I took a liking to her because I had started dating a man who went by Loki.
Whatever it was, she became a fixation in my life. Whenever I was upset about something Cody did I would think, "Sigyn exiled herself and stayed with Loki in a cave. You love this man." Fast forward three years (multitudes of pets named after Loki's children) and I say that she is my patron Goddess.
One day I was looking for beads to go on a hair clip and I came across a bee charm. It just called to me from the other beads. I learned later (from Goat-Willow) that the bee is like a symbol of Sigyn.
Another day I was feeling really down (I go through bouts of depression that will keep me in bed for days) and Cody drug me out of the house to go see people. We went through a drive-thru and suddenly a luna moth landed near our car. I've always loved them but have never seen one in person. I don't know if it means anything, but I had been praying to Sigyn for strength earlier that day. So who knows?
And the most recent happening, I've been wondering if I'm on the right path with what I'm doing. I've been questioning myself a lot lately. I was at the mall last night and I didn't have that much money and I was also in a store that I'm not that fond of. I found myself digging through a bin of jewelry and I pulled out a bracelet with a 'diamond' covered bee on it. It was originally $8 but was marked down to $2 and I happened to have that in change in my purse. I couldn't pass up buying it. It sort of reaffirmed that maybe perhaps she is pleased with me and is alright with me wanting her as my patron Goddess.
I eventually want to try and actually talk to Sigyn. I don't have tarot cards or runes. I don't want to buy runes (except those awesome moose antler ones from Green Wolf on Etsy), I'd rather make my own, and I'm hoarding some deer antler for such a purpose. I was also told that you should never buy your first tarot deck, but I've been waiting for a deck to like.. want me or something. But yeah. I feel like I chose Sigyn but I believe that she likes that I did.
(now for something else: on my makeshift alter, I have a blue bowl that I put candy and little things in I think Loki would like because I mean, he IS her husband and all that)
Writing fic based off Norse mythology doesn't work too well without knowing more about Norse mythology. Marvel's interpretations hardly suffice and ... to cut a long story short, I've been reading up and discovered Sigyn, who in the mythology is Loki's wife. There's not too much information/depictions of her that I can find - this article is great - but nevertheless I find her fascinating. She's described as being loving, faithful (the goddess of fidelity), a family-wife, patient, enduring, etc, and the way all this foils against a character like Loki is - well, fascinating. I like the description the aforelinked article suggests:
[...] quiet strength that must have provided a soothing haven to this most quixotic and fiery of Gods [...] She created inangard, the sacred enclosure of the home, for a God who was otherwise rootless. She rooted Him, balanced Him, accepted Him, and above all loved Him.
The other interesting thing is that she is known to have the ability to control or bind and ward off magic. In what I've read this is suggested as having helped her protect Loki from magical punishments but what is still more fascinating and very idea-inspiring is how that balances against having a sorcerer for a husband.
In terms of appearance, not much is known - there are her depictions in the Marvel comic, here and here, which generally show her as busty, dressed in yellow and green and usually in a tacky-two piece outfit, with that crude headdress. I've taken a first stab at sketching her, developing the headdress into something more delicate. The two-piece outfit it incredibly loosely interpreted and then I've done this flowy dress that I relate to her character. More later.
And oh - tumblr name change. The first one was never going to be permanent anyway, just random lyrics for lack of inspiration when I made it. Siguna is an alternative name of Sigyn. Also my new pseud on AO3 - great thanks to dfotw for the invite!
Prayer to Sigyn (Taken with Instagram)
Sigyn/Siguna is my patron saint. I plan to get this scene tattooed as a sleeve.
Legend of Korra
Yes! Thank you!
1) The first character I fell in love with was Korra. Two minutes into the show and you can already tell how awesome she is
2) I never expected to love Bolin as much as I do now. When I was watching the previews and stuff I thought he'd be kind of a jerk (I'm not sure why), But now he's one of my favorite characters! <3
3) A lot of people seem to like Mako but I don't really. He's just boring to me
4) I love Asami but a lot of people are hating on her ;3;
5) I used to like Mr. Sato for being so nice to the Fire Ferrets but now I don't since. . you know
6) Um I don't think I would kiss anyone from the show. I mean yeah I love Bolin but I wouldn't want to actually. . .o////o
7) I want to be as awesome as Korra!
8) I couldn't bring myself to slap anybody ;3;
9) I love Borra <3
10) I don't despise it but I'm not a big fan of Makorra :/
↓, ♥
I want to go to France the most ;3;
Favorite fictional character of ALL time? uh uh I can't really decide cause it changes with each new fandom I enter. But I guess right now it would be Bolin ;u;
F, W
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
Well, I don't really join a lot of fandoms to begin with, but there have been a few that I was part of for about 4 or 5 years. I can't really think of any I've been in longer than 6. Scratch that, I'm going to count Harry Potter, even though I wasn't really part of the fandom per se, simply because my entire family and I were fans of the series together. So, to answer your question, over 10 years.
W - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
AKA, the part where I have to admit I've been in some embarrassing fandoms
1. Tako from Sushi Pack
2. Raspberry Torte from the 2003 and 2009 SSC series, but for totally different reasons
3. Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
4. Grumpy Bear from Care Bears (doesn't matter which version, he's always the best)
5. Brent from Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
