jw, why only eps 1-54 for greek?

I guess if I was being completely honest I would say episodes 1-53. I included episode 54 to be more complete because it was the season (or midseason?) finale. However, I’d say that my episode stipulation has more to do with me than it does the actual show.

I started watching Greek at exactly the right time in my life to really like it. I started watching maybe a season and a half after it first aired, so I was able to watch pretty continuously up until episode 54. That was when I first had to wait for new episodes to air. In the interim, I became interested in other things and then got really busy with school, and I didn’t come back to watching the show for three years. By that time I was a different person and the show felt equally different.  I had thought about which direction I thought the story lines were going and which relationships would be important and ultimately felt like the show dropped the ball (more obviously so towards the end).

I think it suffered as a lot of shows do by going on longer than maybe it should have. While always needing some suspension of disbelief, the plot seemed to be even more outlandish, employing more flamboyant plot devices than the subtle social politics/commentary it used to draw from. Additionally, I felt like a lot of the characters became caricatures of themselves where they had started out as well-rounded and dynamic characters. And whether it was a time crunch to wrap everything up or just  poor planning, some of the relationships and final characterizations seemed to come out of nowhere. To offer some specifics, I remember thinking that Evan’s character regressed immensely from what it had previously been building toward simply for him to serve as a plot device and Rusty x Ashley felt thrown together and ultimately unsatisfying.

All in all, I think I was just offered too much time to think about how I wanted the story to go, so I ended up being disappointed with what I was offered instead.
