Silent Starlight || Yasutomi & Saitou
[✾] — At long last, Saitou was back among the Shinsengumi. Between leaving for six months to spy on Itou and then being sent away to guard over Miura at Tenma Inn, it felt nearly alien to be back. Living and breathing among the comrades he respected above all others.
However, apart from the captains, Saitou could not deny that there was a barrier between himself and his compatriots. Icy stares and scathing words were hurled upon his back. Coward. Traitor. Liar. Saitou carried them, their weight harsh upon his shoulders, but he would not allow them to bow his spine. He had done this for the sake of the Shinsengumi. Their own sense of loyalty created this mistrust and perhaps, in some cases, hatred between them and himself. He accepted the price willingly.
And so, Saitou turned away from the common room. Within, many of the members from his own division were drinking along with the other men. Bright light suffused rice paper with avid shadows, moving in rhythm with their voices. Laughter, companionship. Saitou’s gaze flicked towards the building then shifted away. His breath whispered in front of his lips, white and faint and solitary.
Although the air was frigid, Saitou was glad to be outside, breathing freely. No longer wearing any pretense, surrounded by the souls he would die for without hesitation. Even if he was still holding himself apart, he felt his burdens starting to ease beneath the tranquil air of home.
Saitou stopped on a soft patch of grass, lifting his gaze skyward. A cloudless expanse of inky darkness pitched without end far above. Stars blossomed brightly against the depths, radiating with pure white light. Saitou scanned the heavens, his sense of self disappearing as he focused on that distant purity.
