Thirties Brown, Whit, and Yellow Tea Dress, Or Think Self-Trim

This brown and white yellow tea dress, or afternoon dress, was part of a sale at Augusta Auctions which specializes in both vintage garments and textiles. It has a little set of flounces falling from the waist in the back, a belt at the waist, and the calf-length skirt--all which indicate it is the mid-1930s when skirts were longer and women were no longer afraid to show that their bodies have curves. Made of silk crepe and chiffon, it illustrates two things perfectly that are useful knowledge to any dressmaker.

First, how a little self-trim can bring decorative charm to any dress. The fabric scraps were made into flowers with little centers and placed at the neckline. This takes a little design pondering and hand work, but it is easy to do and improves the dress considerably. Also, notice how the gather at the shoulders is covered with a smooth piece of fabric which allows you to hide the gathering stitches from view.

Second, how the best choice of a thread color may not be the darkest color in the print. Notice how the bust gathering lines in dark brown thread draw far too much attention to themselves and consider how they would disappear if cream thread was used instead. Sometimes the most dominant color in a print, or the medium color in a print works best, so experiment. Sometimes a color in between two hues works well as I discovered too late when I made buttonholes on a black and white herringbone suit in black. Turns out a charcoal grey would have blended in much better. True, you can use thread color to draw attention to features, but here and on my suit, a better choice would have been the more subtle one.
